Let's Talk!

I don't know how many of you have noticed it but there is a new little box in the Site Info that is titled
Users Talking
. This is a new feature here at Puppets And Stuff that comes to use courtesy of member
Sonny Vegas
. Sonny has access to Ventrilo servers that allow you to connect via a program you download to your computer so that you can actually talk with other folks over the Internet (no typing required)!
This is only something for members of Puppets and Stuff and the reason I am posting the announcement in this area is because I have also made the Bazil's Bazaar forum accessible to only members. We are the only ones who see it!
So now on to how to get hooked up and talking! First you well need to go to the
Ventrilo site
and download a small program that you well then install on your computer. I have linked to their main page here so simply click on the Download link there and select the version of your choice. For most of you that is going to be
Windows i386 - 32bit
which is the first one listed under
Clients
. I have not given the actual version number since that could change. You might note they have a beta version at the bottom of the page but I would suggest not running that version since it could have bugs and not run right on your computer. There is a Mac OSX 10.3 (or higher) - 32bit Universal Binary for those running on a Mac but it is just a Prototype so may or may not work as expected.
Once you have downloaded the program, I just downloaded it to my desk top, you simply double click on the icon to install and follow the instructions. There is more information on installation on the Ventrilo site under
Setup
. If you look under
Client - Quick Setup
on that page you well notice they mention server's host name or IP address, server's port number and server's case sensitive password. There is really no need to know this stuff or use it because I am going to provide you with a link here that well open up the program and connect you once you have installed Ventrilo. In fact the link well also show up in the new side Users Talking window once I get around to it.
For those who do want that information here it is.
Hostname or IP: 69.56.237.18
Port number: 5005
Password: (we are currently not using one leave blank)
Now unlike the Chat here at P&S your user name is not set automatically. You well need to set that up in the program and it would be best if you use the same thing you use here. That can be set up in the program by clicking the -> button next to the User Name field. Again you can find out more about the program itself at the Ventrilo site or by using the Help button in the program.
Ok now that we have covered the basics here is the direct link I promised.
UPDATE:
Removed link from post. Please use the link in the Users Talking box... it works much better.

Hello Crew,
Don't let this scare you if you havent ever talked live with someone before over the internet. I know some of you cave dwellers arent much of adventures, but dont let it keep you away from this. It's like a FREE conference phone anywhere in the world.
You must have a mic/headset for your computer to participate. They run anywhere from $10.00. You may already have a headset or mic. Ask the kids.
Stiqman, Shawn and myself have tested this and have come up with numerous benefits that this could play off of. Some of you might be afraid to speak to others But all you need to do is drop in try it and see if this is good for you.
This a great tool for us to use for: Bonding Puppeteers, Better instructional advice, Technique Chats, Possible future Instructional classes. Quick references. Voice characters..ect.
If you do need help setting it up, if I'm on the site we can set you up in chat and I can walk you through.
Should be fun...Let's use it.

I should mention that even if you do not have a mic/headset you can still connect into the program. Right now Billy and I are using it but he does not have a mic at the moment. He can hear me but I can't here him.
Attached to the Ventrilo program is a simple Chat. Billy is using that to reply to what I say via the mic.
Also another thing that I should mention is that for my set up the auto detect of my voice does not work. Under Setup > Voice I have the Use-Push-To-Talk Hotkey option checked. I then set the Hotket ot F12. At first I had it set to one of the arrow keys but that affects other things like the web page you are viewing if you are multi-tasking.

From a cave dweller to other cave dwellers.
Don't let this scare you. Thanks to Sonny and Shawn this will allow each of us to talk and get better aquainted.
It was not that hard to connect up and works much like your messenger type programs except the quality is much better.
I have a mic... it just has two prongs so I have to get a adapter, will be online soon.
If we keep getting all these neat things at P&S I'm going to have to soup up the ole Computer engine.
Thanks Sonny and Shawn this is like our first step on the moon, although I think the Muppets have already been there.
This is what " Bringing the puppet community together is all about."

I'm dreading lag from my old computer and slow dial-up connection, but I'll see if I can find a microphone and give it a spin...

See a word that you don't know on P&S? Try double-clicking it. A new window will open up, showing the definition. Thanks Shawn!

I got the Ventrilo client software downloaded, installed, and configured, but now I have to find one of our microphones. None of them seem to work too well - when I try to make sound recordings they always turn out very quiet. Maybe I need to fix something in the settings somewhere...

I have DSL now -- when are we chatting? Has anyone designated a time to get together?
I pop in from time to time if I notice folks online - but I guess chatting isn't everyone's cup of tea?

It's seems that the sun has put a damper on the talking in this forum. Once the rain, snow and sleet come we will all need more company!

Hugs, all,
Been on several times, only to find nobody's chatting!
Perhaps we could find a date and time to try it all out?
Eager to hear your dulcet voices!
Blessings.. luv, Jess
