Title: New year, new project. S̶c̶i̶e̶n̶c̶e̶!̶ Talk Show!
Post by: TygerMin on January 16, 2017, 08:56:47 am
As hard as I have tried, I can't shake this puppet bug.  I struggle making them, struggle performing with them, and yet every time I put everything away...I wind up pulling it all out again.  This time, I have teamed up with someone, a Marine Biologist who enjoys talking about experiments.  So, I am creating a lab rat puppet to be his sidekick.

We will be doing a YouTube show where they do various science experiments as well as how to videos on setting up, caring for, and managing aspects of aquariums, terrariums, and vivariums.  The channel will have other puppet acts as well, but the science show will be the main.

I love his nose and unequal pupils, looks like the perfect nut case! Let us know when you  have  something uploaded to youtube. :)

Love a science web series!  I did a concept years ago before YouTube existed.

Thanks :)  Posted this and my friend kept not showing up and essentially killed the project :(  At least with him.  Still gonna do it with my daughter, probably watch things online first then try it ourselves.  Gonna start with making green slime and doing the elephants toothpaste.  Will figure the rest out as we go.  As for his personality, still figuring that out.  I need to do some practice runs with my daughter to see what clicks.  He will be cocky and over confident, because he doesn't really know what he is doing.

Working on another project as well, but I wont post anything on that until I have a few episodes done.  Semi learned my lesson there, gonna do some FaceBook video shorts as that one comes together.

Ordered the book '101 Great Science Experiments' which I will be getting this week.  With my friend out, the dynamic of the show has changed, and maybe for the better.  My daughter will play the role of kid scientist with her trusty lab rat partner.  She can be a character, and I think will really make the show.  The other show is a talk show, Just Dreaming with JD.  JD will conduct online interviews with people.  I did a short video talking about it:

Nothing like experiment books, I have some and they are really fun!!!

So, plan has changed to a talk show that will have different correspondents and skits.  JD will do the interviews and the show will have Lydia's Lab, Ramblings of an Alien, and Jay's Adventures as a separate part of the show.  Received the experiment book today and looks like we are going to have a lot of fun with it!  Also ordered an external webcam, and tested it out on a JD promo:

https://www.facebook.com/jeremy.youngs.5/videos/10211502183848059/ (https://www.facebook.com/jeremy.youngs.5/videos/10211502183848059/)

This is the first time I am fully using a..uhm...full puppet.  I am used to Project Puppet puppets which are much lighter and easier to manipulate.  Any tips on performing arm full extension foam puppets?

Nice video quality for a webcam.

Try to stay vertical, some times the puppet goes a side, just a little bit. Try to perform the puppet with out cameras, make your life with the puppet talking, maybe watch tv, or while making stuff in the house, fixing or organizing things, so the personality will stick to the puppet, how the puppet make thing or react, or talk, you´ll see the difference in a couple of days.

Are you going to show the armas? rods? he can hold a cup in the talk show, so you don´t have to move it, and there you have a free arm to play with.

I hope these things help.

Thanks!  Yeah, I noticed the tilted movement.  I seem to have more control when using the vent opening at the back of his neck versus using my whole arm extended through the bottom.  I am trying to work the set to where I can use the vent opening and support the bulk of the puppets weight on something else.  As for the eye mechanism, I have a lot of practice to do with that one.  This is a live hand glove puppet, and I would like to use his left arm once I get used to the weight.  The cup is a good idea, planned on putting the logo on a cup to sit on the desk.  Though the set is proving a bit challenging at the moment.

I think I need a lighter background.

Same lighting and what I thought was same camera distance...but must have moved something.

*edit* Realized that I had the desk pushed back further for the photoshoot.  Couldn't get back there for my test video, which proved that I need a better method of raising the desk up then a kids table.

Be warned, you asked for it lol.  Here are the two set test videos I did.

Naturally, the best look is the most uncomfortable:D.  Though, that's not saying much in a closet with bright lights and little air circulation.  I must be crazy to love doing this!

Beautiful, there are some things.

Uncomfortable the 80% of the time unless you have a place or a set like the muppets, but... we are not that pro. LOL

I can see that the mic there is the one connected and recording, I can say that the mic is for you, not the puppet, so, make a prop for the puppet and put the real one under the desk, so your voice will sound perfect.

Do you use a monitor?, I mean... a tv screen under the desk, so you can see your self, that help a lot, also when you have guests, so you can watch the interaction and react to the guest actions. I used to use a really small tv for the camera, if it where a webcam, I put the computer under the desk so I control everything down there, and if you can´t, try to play with mirrors.

I'm not trying to bother, just give some ideas and help ;)

Always love tips and suggestions!  May not enjoy critique, but understand it lol :D  With as many false starts as I have had, taking all the advice I can get :)

You know, I immediately regretted putting the mic up there.  Did it to see how it would look on camera.  The desk is an aquarium stand that I have removed the door from, so there is a perfect spot for the mic when filming.  That opening also allows me to view the monitor, though moving it is a good idea to give me better vision.  Or I could purchase a VGA to USB adapter and set up a second monitor.

The part that I am dreading right now, other than setting up interviews, is cutting a slit in the suit jacket to give me access to JD's hand.  That jacket is perfect and I am afraid I will mess it up too much.

I agree. You could get another mic prop for DJ. The second take, the desk looks better. If you have enough space to move your camera back and bring your desk away from the curtain would help to make it less uncomfortable and less risk of moving the curtain. Good lighting and camera image...coming on well. If you put your mic below the desk you will get better audio, but you risk sounding like you are in a box. We get that a lot. so if that happens put lots of absorbent material like foam or blankets around the mike to cut he reverb of the enclosed space

Thanks for the tips :)  I did this quick promo today after putting up a sign.  For this one, the mic is closer to me and I realized that I wont be touching the curtain while filming.  I do have to play with the lights a bit more, but I think its coming together.  Regarding the foam, I have tons of scrap from puppet building, does that type work?

Did a request video for FaceBook, looking for some test interviews.  First test using the hand, though I probably wont use it as much.  First, I can't get him very high to keep my arm out of the shot, and by my position I get my head in the shot as well.  Will find a way to prop the hand on the desk I think.  I am also happy with the lighting.

Seems a little bit uncomfortable.

Maybe you can make the interviews in a screen like "Space ghost" so you don't have to worry about the place and make the necessary  things to be comfortable.

That's the plan.  They will be done online through Skype, then I will either do split screen or be in a smaller screen.

Working on lining up my first interview.  After that, will have to get creative until I can line up a few more.  Probably interview my various puppets that will take part in the show.  Ready to get started!

Maybe for the intro you can take some more shots, close ups, change camera view, different angles. So it will look more dynamic.

I like Pluto new puppet.

hmm...good point.  I will probably use that one until I film a few more segments and swap them out.  The trick is trying to show everything in 5 seconds.

Yeah, I am enjoying Pluto.  It is a new line from Folkmanis Puppets, and they also have Mickey, Minnie, and Donald.

Pretty neat puppet. I like the simplicity of the mech for the ears. Never really thought of air power for such an action.

This is a good topic. It's one that we all struggle with at some time or another. Keeping at it is not easy, but is what needs to happen. Also you are right I think, that other people seldom see all the mistakes that you see yourself.

I think that's an issue for everyone. I'm also a game developer and for a single project I have like 33 unfinished games, it's crazy. I don't even want to talk about puppets, I have a big project... I have everything I need... and a bunch of excuses, LOL

Thanks The Director :)

You know, its amazing talking to people who build.  It does seem that there is always those unstarted, barely touched, and almost finished projects.  Here I am 3 weeks later, and I haven't really moved on the thins I mentioned, but I do have some more projects that came to mind to work on. I did cut out pieces for the Mandalorian armor and just have to heat, shape, and paint.  Which isn't hard, just...other things come up :D  Excuses and procrastination.  And I am milking being sick last week, a little too much!
