Title: PVC Boning
Post by: pagestep007 on June 01, 2018, 08:10:08 pm
Hi to all. I promised Snail that I would eventually do a tutorial on using PVC to give more strength or form to foam puppet bodies. So here it is. After a few months of trials they seem to be holding up well, and they do make putting the puppet on a bit easier, as the body opening stays open, and the  body  holds it's shape better.

Love it!  Good idea to recess it a bit. We moved to all electric house and don't have gas burners anymore. Maybe my paint removing heat gun will be hot enough. It is amazing what you come up with.

Your talk of puppets getting crushed in suitcases made me wonder if anyone had every used vacuum bags to collapse a puppet for travel and if puppet plumped back out OK. We have a mission trip to Tanzania leaving soon and they have limited space for puppets. May have to do a test to see if vacuum bag is viable option or not. Maybe we could have boning that was removable for travel and slips back in on arrival to get shape back.

Great video as always!  Amazes me what you do by hand, though I am not sure if electrical is safer for cutting pvc or not.

Heat gun will work, its what costumers use to shape sintra, which is a pvc type foam.  I have seen it used on a variety of plastics.
