Title: Where do you find foam in your area?
Post by: Billy D. Fuller on May 10, 2006, 07:01:25 am
If you could list the places to by foam in your area, this may help others that live in or around your area to buy foam for future projects.
I buy from... Southeastern foam company, High Point, N.C. 1-800-458-0502 ( ask for Pat)
Billy
Antron fleece available from Georgia Stage, Inc. - 1-800-211-8217 (ask for Kathy)

I have been looking for the thin foam that they make sole inserts for shoes. I was surfing and I discovered I believe is called plastizote foam.
Does anyone know where I can buy this type foam? Does this look like what I'm looking for?

Billy,

I can't remember if it was here or on another list, but the conclusion was that "plasterzote" was just another name used in Britain and/or Europe for EVA or a similar foam. There are other, related types of foam called "plastizote" and "plastazote." OK... try checking the "puppet virgin" thread by Alexa.

You might want to try searching on "polyethylene foam," "closed cell polyethylene foam," "closed cell foam," or "orthotic foam," or something like that to find out what the product is called in the US. Here's a search with all of the terms in it...

http://www.google.com/search?q=closed+cell+polyethylene+foam+orthotics

It looks like there are lots of different trade names for this kind of foam, including the plast-zotes in Britain. Some varieties are softer, and some firmer - so just knowing the name of the foam might not be enough. There's a type called Minicel foam that you might want to check out too, which could be related. It's another type that I've read about for building stuff...

http://www.foambymail.com/Minicel.html

http://www.usafoam.com/closedcellfoam/minicel.html

You've probably already seen this page on foam from the Puppetry Home page, too...

Title: Comfort Felt and Foam Inc.
Post by: Shawn Sorrell on July 02, 2006, 12:13:09 am
I purchase my foam from the following company if I need large pieces or specialty foam.  For basic poly foam in small amounts I buy at Hobby Lobby or other hobby stores.

Comfort Felt and Foam Inc.
3021 Cherry ST.
Kansas City Mo 64108-3124
816-531-0822

They cut and distribute the foam to all sorts of companies that manufacture items using foam so have just about everything there is including the EVA foam I prefer and the reticulated foam.  Pretty sure that if someone needed a larger amount they could ship.  They work quite a bit with all the theaters in town and are pretty used to use walking in and saying "I am doing such and such ... any idea what foam I might use?". :)

Do you buy the reticulated in a roll ? The company I order from told me that they custom cut it from big sheets and the price varies. A 16" x!8" was going to be around $6

Billy,
Comfort Felt and Foam will give it to me how ever I want. :)  I have often had them cut something into 4 X 4 squares so it fits better in the car or if it is a thin enough piece I just have them roll it up. I am afraid I am not good at keeping track of the prices. If I need it I buy it.  :spin  I don't use the reticulated foam but that sounds like a good price.  Like I said I prefer the EVA or regular polyfoam.

Thanks Ron  :lol I just recieved my samples of foam from the Foam Factory you sugessted http://www.foambymail.com/index.html (http://www.foambymail.com/index.html)

The neoprene is the foam I was looking for that they use in shoe insoles.
The dryfast is just like the reticulated foam used for puppets.
The polyethylene is a semi hard course foam used in flowtation devices and is much like the foam  that is used in building mouthplates.

Thanks for the link, tha solved a lot of my questions. It is something about a sample that makes things all come together.

Samples... d'oh! That didn't even occur to me. It doesn't really cost them anything to send you a scrap, and little chunks of foam would be cheap to ship.

That really would make a big difference, to be able to hold a piece of the foam in your hand and see if it has the right properties. I was afraid that you might have listed the URL for that place here yourself previously, but I wasn't sure. Since I don't have a lot, (or any), experience building foam puppets I've been googling like crazy lately for more information, and also trying to bookmark all of the sites linked here in my browser's favorites.

I'm glad that you found the link useful, Billy.

Fellow Philadelphians:
Joanns has worked well for me but they did discontinue the low density foam (which is cheaper) so they only carry the high density.
Also the only store to carry foam of any kind on Fabric Row is:
ADLER'S FABRICS
742 S. 4th St
Phila, PA   19147
215-925-8984

Sadly they are VERY expensive but they sell foam in various shapes which is kinda nice and if you go to:
http://southstreet.com/fabricrow/ you can print out coupons plus check out locations of the other fabrics stores on the row.

Just as and aside I've been very dispointed to see a few of the foam stores that I've tried to get to in Philly go out of business such as Foam Land  :'(

Hope this helps <3

So far i've been getting my foam from a small fabric shop that's local to me.  They only have the Poly-foam but they do have a bunch of sizes from 1/2" up to 2 or 3" thick.  The problem is they only get the narrower rolls that are 24" wide.  They were charging $2.50 a foot so 24"x12" of 1/2" thick for $2.50

No idea if that's a good bad or highway robbery price but after going to like 30 places looking for foam I was literally foaming at the mouth so I had to get some so I could get started :)  Some of those weblinks look great that foam by mail place seems to have the poly foam at a really good price and a much wider piece.  Thanks for all of the web links i'll definately pick up a batch of stuff once I run out of what i've got here so far.

Thats a good one Steve :lol :lol :lol Thats a pretty good price for foam retail I buy it by 50 ft rolls and don't get much cheaper than that, except mine comes 30" wide.
Foaming at the mouth, I'll remember that every time I go to cut a piece of foam now. :lol :lol

I guess that's OK as long as you aren't mouthing at the foam - that would be a little hard to swallow...

Hi,  :wave I'm hoping there is a fellow Brit out there who can help with where to find foam sheets for puppet building on the UK internet. I don't want to have to pay shipping and taxes etc. to get it from USA but am unsure what type of foam we can get here. No craft shops locally or on the internet seem to sell it because of fire regulations.

Thank you. :spin

If anyone has good sources for foam (especially those who sell over the Internet) if you can please take a moment to add them to the suppliers section of the foam article on the Puppet Building Wiki - Link Removed.

Thanks!

The address you posted is a site that serves up links to other sites.  Do you remember the name of the site you visited?  I did enter "foam"  in the search box and it returned several links one of them being: http://www.foamonline.com/

Here in Canada there is a mattress specialist company called "Foam King". Im not sure if they have locations outside of Alberta or not, but they have all sorts of foam (polyfoam, highdensity insulating foam etc) and will cut it to your specifications...they can even order in scott/reticulated foam!

Alternately you can just send me the information and I'll be happy to add it.

I fixed the link.  It should work now.  I just purchased the same foam from Joann's today at their 1/2 price three day sale.  It came to $2.99 a yard.  Sale ends tomorrow.

Do you buy the blue/green foam at Joanns?  I do not care for it, but I use it some. I liked what Hancocks used to carry before they switched brands (and doubled the price). I preferred Academy, but they quit carrying it. I do buy it at Hobby Lobby.
There is a foam store in downtown Houston, and one off loop 610 and 290 (around 43rd street) that has all types of foam. Their prices are good. The cheapest (1" thick) is not good, too flimsy. The drawback is they want to sell it to you one day and have you pick it up a few days later. At the price of gas, I cannot see making two round trips of almost 100 miles each. I also like to see and feel the foam, and they did not have samples of everything. I got the impression that you are supposed to know what you want when you get there! LOL.

Someday, I'll be able to invest in more professional supplies, but in the meantime, I like finding bargains to practice on (should I mention the eight 18 gallon totes I have collected of fabric this past year from clearance, remnants, and second-hand stores?  :-[) Anyway, the other day I found a kid's nap mat for 75 cents at a thrift store.
(advertisement picture from KinderMat for the visually inclined. :))

I suspect that the previous owner gave up on the idea of having their child nap - the mat was full of holes from someone jabbing a pencil into it - but now it will serve a new purpose. I cut off the covering, giving me four 12" x 20" x 1" foam pieces, of admittedly unknown density / quality, but suitable for practice (and no sign of the pencil punctures after washing  :))

Does anyone know somewhere in New York?

Title: Re: Where do you find foam in your area?

Depends on what part of New York.  If you live in the Albany you can go to Albany Foam.  They supply upholsterers and can get you just about any foam you want.  I assume there are other suppliers in other major Metro areas like Rochester, Syracuse and of course NYC.   JoAnn Fabrics carries polyurethane foam in several different thicknesses and you can thind their stores all over the state..

Hi all

I am new to the world of puppet building and I am looking to build my first puppet!

I'm from the UK and was wondering if anyone can recommend anyplace for me to purchase foam from over here and if anyone can recommend any foam that is particularly forgiving for first time puppet makers?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

I would suggest contacting a puppet maker in your area or city or province and see where they get there's.....as well do you have the Yellow pages (business pages) look up "foam shops" you will sometimes be surprised at what you find.

Hope this helps......

Thanks

I have been in contact with a number of puppet makers that I have found in the UK, but not much luck in getting replies unfortunately.

I have looked for foam suppliers in the UK but i'm a bit overwhelmed with the choice and not sure what I should be going for as a beginner?

call them and see if any deal with puppet makers and see what they usually buy from them....this might help you with the details.  Trust me it is never easy to find resources for the making materials it is a job in itself.

Might I suggest that you check your phone directory, or do an internet search for upholsterers or upholstery supplies. Even if they don't carry what you need, they might be able to send you in the right direction.

Buy the cheap kind at the foam stores you have found.  :)  Ok I know that some may be very picky about the grade, weight and composition of their foam (even I have my favorites) but heck it is all foam!  Don't let that bog you down or stop you.  If you have craft or fabric stores see if they have some.  Hear in the US craft and fabric stores carry foam that is fine for puppet making. Could be the same in the UK.  Like I said I have my favorite foams but I use all kinds to make puppets.

I need 1/2" foam that is denser (is that a word) than the green foam at Joanns.
Anyone have any idea what I need to ask for?

Ask for EVA or high density foam. It is what I use for body characters and even some styles or hand puppets. On hand puppets I use 2lb 1/2" and on body chareter you can increase to 4lb or even the 1".

I'm looking for a new foam supplier near or around South Carolina. I've ordered from Southeastern foam in N.C. ( not interested) and my last order came from Albany foam. I ordered two 50 foot rolls of 24" wide X 1/2" The foam was flat in the center and never regained it's shape. So I don't want to order from them anymore. Another problem is I like to know up front what my shipping is going to be before I place my order. If anyone has any suggestions I would like to know. I had to take my puppet kits down off the SS Puppets site until I solve my foam issues.
