Hi, I am working on a number of things at the moment, but one is finishing off a few pigs. A friend wanted a pig, so I went through 7 different designs of head with slight variations on each one before coming to one he liked. I hope to have a scene with a ship load of pigs some time in the future, so I saved all the draft foam heads to get some variation in the swine herd. Occasionally I cloth cover another one. This is the outcome of the last design



and now I am making one with a lip and snout change. The snout is a little smaller, and I think a little less piggish 

 

We don't have Antron  here, so I use sweat suit material, ..scraps which we are given, which means you have to be pretty particular in your pattern to avoid wrinkles. The next pig will be the prototype, hopefully without wrinkles. Everything is red at this stage as that is the most abundant color I have at the moment. The finals will be another color. The eyes are not the  final ones, just  interim ones.

Nice shape on the pigs head! Coverings don't look to bad to me especially on the second bodiless one.  BTW: Nice Singer machine in the background.

Thanks  Na and Billy, and Shawn, the sewing machine has a story to it. It is a dinky thing I was given. I get lots of comments on it. It was brought to Colombia by a missionary couple by the name of Miller (which is written on the case). They used it to teach indigenous tribeswomen to sew clothing. The Millers got elderly and retired, and somehow it came to me. It sat around for a while as I had another zigzag capable machine, and the little singer had got a little rusty in the workings and  first use did not impress me. Then one day I decided to take it out and service it, and it has been my  preferred machine since. I take it everywhere. I also have an antique treadle singer that I inherited from  my  mother in law. And an industrial machine that I rescued from  a clean out of a ministry here. It needs a good overhaul though. I could do with an overlocker.
   By the way, does anyone have guiding tips or sage type wisdom on the shape of Disney's Miss Piggy's head. The original Miss piggy I think was carved foam and it  has evolved. I think I even read that latest heads are cast foam, so it would be reasonably hard to emulate with  cloth covering. However I have seen some very  good copies... But I just could not capture 'The  Shape'. Anyone got some secrets there?

Well Gary, my sewing is slowly getting better, glad you like it....and Lola, the final product will probably look something similar. I did the 'prototype' version of the  'head' in the  photos, and although it  is wrinkle free, I think it looks too much like a kangaroo, so its back to the drawing board to enlarge the snout, and  maybe reform the ears.

No no, nothing like a kangaroo. That is one awesome looking pig! Love it!

ha , Lizzie, I suppose you will know all about kangaroos!(us kiwis are not quite so versed in such animals... although I did make a trip acros the ditch once and saw some real roos up close.) Indeed the finished versions in the Photos I am satisfied with, but the single head, by the time I did the last draft, I was not satisfied with it. I stuffed the head crown differently to the others and it poofed out a bit, but  I will go back to basics there to fix that. I changed the ears this morning which helped things lots, and will look at the snout... I did discover a new way to make eye lashes stick straight out on an eye design..that  was a positive in the process.

I like the happy mouth, he looks very sweet. 

I agree with the others...it has a really nice shape and the material coverage is nicely done...congrats!

Thanks  guys, so very encouraging. I made adjustments to  the last head, will post a photo. And I started the next  one...

I got the design prototype of the pig done.  Fixed the snout, redid the ears, and put a body on. I am  satisfied with this one. Now onto the next... a slightly downturned snout one.
