Re: Need skin color fabric that will glow in black light for Elvis! Posted by Angel in Tx on Sep 21, 2012
Okay, so I have some antron white, and I talked to Julie through e-mail and I am going to try dying my own.  I've dyed fabric before but this will be the first with antron and this new fluorescent dye.  I'll let you know how it turns out.  I just ordered the dye today so it will be next week before I get it and I don't know when I will have a chance to actually dye it.

I'm excited and nervous but I love to learn new techniques so it should be fun....right???

Just a quick tip... don't test or experiment you your full piece of Antron.   I am sure you wouldn't have done that but you never know. Do a small batch of dye and then cut off a small test piece.  May waste a bit of dye but better that then the entire piece of fabric.

Good tip Shawn.  I only have some scrap that Julie sent me so I don't feel too bad about testing on it.  I haven't even taken it out of the bag to see what size pieces I have.

Do I need to wash it before dyeing do you think?

You don't need to wash it only get it throughly wet.  No need to ring it out.

If you are using the pink and yellow to make peach, disolve the dyes separetly then add to very hot water.  NOT boiling, but the hotter the better.  It will produce a darker color and exhaust better.

1. Wet fabric. Remove from sink or washing machine
2. Run very hot water
3. Dissolve dye in smaller container with extremely hot water.
4. Add dye to water. Agitate to throughly dispurse.
5. Add fabric all at one time. Agitate to throughly dispurse.  In machine set for longest wash cycle. Set timer for 10 min.
6. If using citric acid, dissolve in hot water. If using white vinegar just use plain.
7. Make sure not to pour acid direcly onto fabric.  Add acid a very small amount at a time. Agitating inbetween.
8. Add more hot water to raise temp for darker colors.  Set timer. Check after 5 min, ten etc.  to check color rinse sample piece under cold water until water runs clear. Pat dry on towel. Test under blacklight. Shades are much lighter under the blacklight than in regular light.
9. Dry in dryer on air fluff or hand dry.

Uric acid glows under black light.  We used black light to look for rodent urine in FDA lab.  It helps you find puppy mishaps too. Tell your team to wash their hands well after taking breaks when doing black light show.

That is pretty funny.   How embarrassing would that be. I actually forgot to turn off my mic once when I went to the bathroom. Luckily it was only during rehearsals.

I had a bolt of peach fleece and it was blacklight.  I bought it at either Joann's or Hancock's.  I have some candles on my website made from that fleece.  I am out of it, and so far have not found that exact color again.  Since they are getting the fall fabrics in, I hope it will be available.

DON'T waste your money on the spray.  It just does not do what it is supposed to do.

This is what we came up with for Blacklight flesh and darker hair.  He glows just lovely under the blacklight.  Looks more Elvis-ish as well.  I think it's the blue hair that throws me off.  Client liked him that's all that matters.
 Elvis Head
The gold glasses turn black under the BL.

Cool! I like the hair. Is it foam or fabric that is layered.  I really like that style for hair. Seen it done with foam before which is why I ask.
