That's the easiest way to make a pattern for cutting the fur. I draw the pattern on the masking tape, peel it off and cut it so that I can lay it flat.

Ah ok... that makes sense. My first thought was pattern but then thought but he already has the form... forgot all about covering.

I keep eyeing that cat head....debatting on whether to find a place or not.  Do you have one of these heads completely finished?  Curious how they look with fleece and fur.

The first 3d-printed head is now covered in fur (pattern made with masking tape, added seam allowance, cut the fur, sewed it together by hand, glued it to the head with high-temperature hot glue). The puppet is not finished - the fur on the head will be trimmed.
