Puppet Build For Client and Pattern Posted by Jon on Sep 05, 2008
A few weeks ago I was asked by a teacher friend of mine to build her a puppet that she could use in the classroom.  For several months I had the idea of developing a relatively simple puppet pattern that I could make available to beginning puppet builders.  Well I decided to combine projects and I've been building this puppet and making careful patterns of each and every part as I went along.

The pattern is not yet ready to share but I wanted to show you how the puppet looks so far.

If you go to my  Bashful Puppet Blog you can read a full description of the build materials so far.

Let me know what you think

Looks very nice - I'm in the middle of doing the same thing (making a pattern for a muppet). Yours is so different from mine    It's nice to see that we can all get such varying results. How are the arms attached at the shoulders?

Nothing complicated.  I just stitch the arm to the shoulder.  I read about other methods that promise more mobility but have yet to try them.  I figured that since I was going for a simple build I would keep it all simple.  If people want to they can improve on the plan.

Na, do you have any picture of what your puppet looks like.  Always like to see how other people get the job done.

No pictures, yet - I've only finished doing the head. I hope to get the body started on Monday. I've only done three muppets, and in trying to simplify it for a pattern, I had the idea of doing the arms the same way as you. I think it will be easier than what I was doing before, which is discussed in The Foam Book (using doll joints and string to attach the arms to the body).

I've never had any difficulty with the movement of my puppets arms and I've done all of them the same way.  I guess the only concern I might have is durability.  There is possibly a danger of the fabric on the shoulder and arm becomeing stretched out or worn.  Because I that I should probably consider another method.

Well keep us posted on your build.

Jon I like the puppet to................... Wow we are all working on puppets with different patterns to make available , how exciting. I can always add a new pattern to already large collection. It is funny I usually use something I liked from one pattern a bit from another one a little more from that one, and end up with pretty good looking puppet. Then throw a little bit of my own ideas and it is a new creation.

I can hardly wait to see everyones designs.I am no where near the level of designing a puppet. But it's nice to see the talent here.

He looks great Jon, it's quite a task designing a pattern!  Like the colour of the fabric and the head shape looks good.
