Re: problem with dyeing Antron (spots) Posted by tsu on Nov 08, 2008
@Miguel --- 5 times? OMG. I even do not want to think of dyeing one piece of Antron 5 times to get rid of those spots. I'd rather eat that fabric than to be so pissed off seeing they do not want to be covered with a dye...
@Jay --- I think you're right. I possess those ones so I keep them next to me while I'll be dyeing the Antron, especially now, when Pam had same problems... so it seems it was not my fault but rather Antron.
@Pam --- Did you have those problems every time you tried to dye the newest Antron? What did you do then? Rubbed the same way I did?

I never had the the old Antron but I just got a 50 foot roll of the new stuff of which I have 41 yards left. I noticed the back of the fabric has like 1" grid marks woven into the fabric. I thought this was pretty neat but wonder if this could have something to do with it spotting. Does yours have the same thing on back?
I will dye a yard this week and see if I have the same problem and if I do I'll contact the factory.

Billy, no, a back of my Antron is just fine and has plain texture. I didn't check all yards, just one or two but that one I had problem with, is fine too.

I'm going to try to keep track of how they dye now. I have 12 oz. and 14 oz. on hand right now. I think it's the 12 oz. that is more problematic. The fleece for the alien was 14 oz. and I had no problem with him. I think it was the 12 oz. that was a stickler. I can barely tell the difference between the two weights. Neither of mine sport the grid Billy mentioned. I do know there have been complaints about the newer 12 oz dying unevenly. You may have to be aggressive with just this particular batch. When you re-order ask the people at Georgia Stage if this problem has been resolved yet so you don't get stuck with the same problem. Let us know how yours turns our Billy.

Could you two let me know the exact dates you placed your orders with gorgia stage and let see if these came off the same run of cloth from hampshire textiles. When I got my new bolt it has all that info on it which I saved............... I'll then run it pass Brandy from Georgis stage and I'll see what I can find out.

Billy, I placed my order on 27th August. and Antron I ordered was 12oz one, as Pam said.
I suppose I will dye some pieces of fabric today or tomorrow (more likely tomorrow) so I let you know if that problem occured once again.
Pam, let us please know what you will gain with your Antron, especially with 12oz one.

I ordered mine September 9. I only purchased two yards of each weight and I have no bolt or lot number.

Do you guys add salt to the water? I don't, but wonder if it helps.
Re: problem with dyeing Antron (spots) Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Nov 16, 2008
I have been researching different ways of dyeing.........using rit dye. It is reccomended that you use plain salt. I have read where other use white destilled vinegar to make it 25% acidic. I've read where others use a acid base chemical used in photography in the rit dye bath making it 75% acidic. You can buy a product from the rit dye company called fixative which is close to the retayne use with acid base dyes like jaquard dyes
