Back to the sewing machine conversation (I missed it when it was actually going on.)  My wife banned me from using her sewing machine, something about a bent needle or a needle being out of alignment.  I don't think it was my fault but who knows.  Everything works out ok though.  I was just given a 1951 Singer with the orignal art deco cabinet.  The old girl works great.  She doesn't have a reverse but when you put your foot on the peddle she purrs like she was new.  My mom and Grandmother always loved the old singers because they almost never broke down. 

Wow Jon thats great! I have been looking for one of those. Are you sure there is not reverse. On those 50's models there used to be a lever on top and one possition was reverse.

Jay -  :-[you're right there is a reverse.   It just doesn't say so on the machine itself so I assumed there wasn't.  It's alright I get over the embarassment and will try to make sure I read the manual next time.

It is great and funny at the same time that so many men have a sewing machine on this site and talk freely about it.  I had an Uncle that was a great seamstress and he didn't want anyone to know (it was a small town and I am talking 20 years ago).  He know that machine inside and out and did some great work.  I just like the fact that we can be so open to what we do these days.

I love my machine it is a modern machine with some computerized brain to it.  I always say that I have more mileage on my sewing machine than my car.

I don't know why guys would be ashamed. My family is full of male tailors, and I'm sure at some point one of them would have had a sewing machine.

I like my sewing machine - bought myself a new one at the start of the year - but really miss my old one. It was my grandmother's, and if you can picture the typical sewing machine of the 1950s, this is it. I'm sure it belongs in a museum or a kitsch kitchen somewhere

But then, I always was a tool geek. I am currently staring at my power drill, my laminator, my Plasti Dip can, and about five other things...

exactly. I should be ashamed because I'm a girl and I've never sewn before... by hand and with a sewing machine... ;P
I tried once to learn how to, but when my thread was broken, I gave it up. now I have no choice but learn how to use a sewing machine. :P
