I'm stumped Posted by gav on Nov 09, 2008
My latest puppet i'm making is a red and green monster puppet.  I'm a little stuck on what i'm going to go with the body. Most if not all of the puppets I make have a human type bodies. But I wanted to do something different and fitting.  The problem is I can't think of a good idea for a cone shaped monster puppet that fits the look.  If anyone has an idea it would be a huge help.  I've never had this happen where i'm just blank.  The head came real easy to  :'(nmbnm 005

Oh also the head isn't done.  I just figured I would post what i've done so far.  I'm planing on changing the eyes a bit.

the first thing I thought of was a kind of mirror image. A cone shaped body, with wide shoulders, narrowing down to a very small opening for the arm to go up through.

Great fearsome looking eyes!

Yeah I like that idea. I'm a little confused on what you mean when you talk about the construction of the  shoulders  to the arms though.

I think the arm chris mentioned was the puppeteers arm as it goes up through the body to the head.

The idea I had was a kind of octopus or spider kind of body.  I was thinking of it being quite fat with short legs.

Yeah, you'd think I could be clear when writing. I didn't address the puppet's arms at all, I was referring to the base of the body where the puppeteer's arm enters. Regarding the puppet's arms. maybe long, skinny with long nasty claws.

I like both the ideas.  I agree claws are a must.  I think i'm going to work on that today.    It's funny you said a spider body.  A friend of mine side the same thing.  Since two people have told me that now.  I think i'll draw something out and see how it looks.  The idea chris had looked real good but will only fit if the legs come out right.  I think long legs would fit the best.

By the way, how are all those feathers attached?
Re: I'm stumped Posted by gav on Nov 11, 2008
The eyes are on individual thick but fixable wire.  I then took the wire and blended it in with the feather strip.  Then hot glued it to the feather area.  This part wasn't easy.  It wasn't fun trying to glue the feathers strip to the wire but in the end it came out great.  Even if you looked up close or tried to feel for the wire you can't see where the wire was put in.  Next I glued the eye with a nice covered back.  The other end I cut into the puppet and made small slits and intertwined the wire through a few loops in the puppet head.  Then hot glued the slits in the foam back up. After that I did a littlel patch work on the slits in the fleece. It worked out great and stood straight up and was still able to move based on the flex of the wire.  After that I just did a circular wrap of the feathers while sewing the feather strip to the puppet all the way up the puppet. Then I blended it in with the eye strip of feathers.

I think of almost a bell shape body
Re: I'm stumped Posted by Jon on Nov 11, 2008
A bulbish, bell shaped, spider body would give an odd alien looking character.  One of those situation where the parts look so mismatched that they fit perfectly.
