Hello, Allan from Ottawa, Canada Posted by puppetacious on Nov 13, 2008
Hello everyone, what a great site.

Here's my latest creation.  She's called La Catarina, after a traditional character from the Mexican day of the dead.  She's the first puppet I've made from papier mache, ironically, after years of working with foam and fleece and latex.  I put in a simple mechanism to operate her jaw, as I hold her by a rod under her dress.

Once again, it's great to find this community.
Thanks, for letting me share.

Hey I lived in Ottawa for most of my life......I am in Vancouver ( alot warmer and a lot less snow).

I love La Catarina, she looks great....I like the outfit she is wearing it is very detailed.  Did you take her a night out on town for Halloween?

Thanks for sharing........

Welcome to P&S.  You got a talent for creating bony looking puppets.  Can't wait to see more of your work.

Love it! What's the mechanism to move the jaw?
Re: Hello, Allan from Ottawa, Canada Posted by puppetacious on Nov 14, 2008
The mechanism is pretty simple.  I just used what I had on hand which was wood dowels, metal screw eyes, and a spring.  I drilled a hole in the handle and put a piece of dowel through it, which the jaw is attached to (I used epoxy putty to attach it).  I attached a 2" lever made of thin plywood to the dowel.  On one end of the lever I attached the spring to snap the jaw back closed.  On the other end of the lever is a rod, attached with the screw eyes, that can be operated with my thumb.  Of course it sound more complicated than it looks, but I don't know how to put a diagram on here.

There's probably easier ways to make a mech, but I like to work with wood, so that's what I tend to fall back on.  It's the first one I did, but it works well.
