How to make a bird puppet Posted by Bhanu on Nov 26, 2008
Happy Thanksgiving Day to all P&S members and their families.

I would like to share my bird puppet making process.

1.First I extended the oval mouth pattern and made a narrow one to resemble
the beak of a bird. Covered the inside part with red felt with a pink tongue.
2. Then fixed foam pieces in a curved manner on the top & bottom of the folded mouth piece to insert  4 fingers
on the top and to fit my thumb at the bottom. Remember, the foam piece should not stick out from the mouthpiece edge.
3. Cut 4 cardboard pieces,  glued two together, covered with black felt & fixed the pieces on the top and bottom
of the beak in such a way that it snugly covered the foam pieces.
4. The top side black felt extended beyond the red mouth piece where as I folded or sort of tucked in the extra bit
of bottom felt piece.
5. Head foam was cut according to the size of the beak. then  another foam in the shape of a gusset,  then a third piece
for the back of the head. All the three pieces were glued keeping the gusset piece in the middle. The back head piece was
cut in a half moon shape after sticking with the gusset for easy manipulation.
6. Three pieces of green colour fleece cloth were stitched and covered on the foam head.
7. Head (front part) was fixed on the front beak along the extended felt piece using glue gun.
8.Green fleece cloth neck was attached to the head and body.
9. Two legs were cut from foam, covered it with fleece. Foam toes were fixed on to the legs and attached at the lower end of the body.
10. Wings, eyes and green fur were fixed in appropriate places.
...Presto the bird was ready to take off....it is approximately 17 inches tall from head to toe.

See the pics for more details. I have written about this project in one of the new puppet section/thread under puppet project forum.
Since not many would have seen the pictures...thought will be best if the details are given under the tutorial section as suggested by Billy. Thanks Billy for your feedback.

The lower part of the body has not come out neatly...needs to alter the template. I will post the beak, head and body template
once I get it scanned.

Cheers
Bhanu

Bhanu, thanks for posting the instructions for your build.  It's great to have a little bit of a description of how the build is done.

I love you! ;-; I've been trying to solve the head problem for a puffin I'm making and I had no idea how to go about it.

This has helped me a lot and now I can finally start on it :D !
