Making Eyelashes Posted by Jon on Dec 07, 2008
I saw a tread where someone was looking for Eyelashes and it made me wonder about how to make eyelashes. Have any of you out there ever made your own eyelashes? What kind of materials did you use? How did you put them together? Any input would be a big help.

I've used black craft foam, maraboa or ostrich feathers, or you can even do the old fashion way like they do on newborning dolls. You glue small pieces of hair to the eyelid, then trim and shape.

I have used fake eyelashes from the dollar store or somewhere I find them on sale. I also like the plastic eyelashes from darice.

I'll explain how I do it if you like.

I've been using felt (I believe it was my thread that you were referring to... I got a care package with some plastic eyelashes and decided to test them out)
I'd love to learn the foam technique too

Here are some pictures illustrating how I make lashes. (I'm running low on black craft foam, so I used blue in the photos.)
Start with a rectangle of black craft foam. Snip along entire length creating a "comb" shape. Then clip each "tooth" in the comb at an angle (bottom right to upper left). Then massage between warm fingers to curl and shape.
You can vary this idea to make thick or thin lashes or partial lashes, etc.

PuppetLady: thanks for the photo tutorial on how you make eye lashes. I'll have to give it a try with my rhino beetle. the false eyelashes I used are really only nticable close up.
