Not a puppet, but a possible inspiration for one Posted by Ron G. on Dec 08, 2008
Cthulhu is a character from stories by HP Lovecraft, in old pulp magazines such as Weird Tales. Lovecraft and his old school scary stories are still very popular today, 80+ years later, with a thriving sub-culture of fans, fan fiction, movies, podcasts, and related goodies.

Here is an eBay auction for a hand-needle felted art doll of the normally very scary Cthulhu as Santa Claus, about to give a little girl a lovely pink squid for Christmas. The bidding has gone from $9.99 to over a hundred dollars in just a day - and I'm sure that these are real bids, because of the popularity of the subject.

Making felted puppets???  Thats a cool idea.  If you did it right there wouldn't be any seams at all.  You could also felt knitted puppet if they're knitted from pure wool yarn.  Either way the effect could be cool.  Puppet building ... so many puppet to build and so many methods to try.  off to research.

I have my felting needles but have yet to try it................ It is on my do do list extended from 2008-2009

I love the art of wool felting. Great find Ron and is most liklely worth the time the artist put in it.

I think that Ron was thinking about the character of the green guy as a puppet idea.  Not felting a puppet......but I may be wrong.

I also agree that it would be a neat puppet idea....

Thanks Ron

Daryl's right - I do have a soft spot in my heart for monster puppets. Shrimpenstein was a childhood favorite, and the Muppets introduced a whole new way of looking at monsters. In the original stories Cthulhu and his "friends" are unimaginably horrible monsters, whose destiny is to retake the Earth from us puny, feeble humans when the stars are properly aligned. So I find the humorous depictions of Cthulhu to be a lot of fun.

I also really love the idea of needle felting puppets, and we've discussed it here before - but it sounds like an enormous amount of work. Maybe for finger puppets, though I love the idea of felting something larger which has been knit or crocheted from pure wool yarn.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Hey Ron,
Here is a link for a dvd with Shrimpenstein. It has a few other old cartoons and shows on it. I have purchsed this dvd about a year ago. I must say that its really neat to see what puppeteers had and used back then.

I wonder if Cthulhu was the inspiration for the Davy Jones Character on Pirates of the Carribean Dead Man's Chest.  Sure looked similar.  Cool character I've been thinking about how to puppetize it.  Could be cool if I ever get around to it.
