Re: How do I design a pattern from scratch Posted by gav on Jan 23, 2009
I love building puppets from scratch. When I first started making puppets I used some great patterns from forum members. Then when I was ready to move on Two people helped me allot. One was Jay (Dr Puppet) the other one was this guy.
These videos helped allot with a great way to make your basic puppet shape. Including making a small foam mock up with old foam pieces.

Wow, it seems everyone is a member of this forum. I have read and reread Chensational's blog on building that mechanical pirate head out of a lacrosse helmet. Inspirational.
The Dr. Puppet videos are good, I've purchased a couple of them. He already had his foam pattern figured out for the David Tennant puppet before the videos started, so I'm guessing once you stumble across a good pattern you keep it!
So between Jay Tyson's videos, Philip Hatter's red panda videos, the Project Puppet patterns, and all the other bits and pieces I've discovered thanks to this forum, I believe I'm ready to begin!

Once you feel like you have an idea about how to begin you need to get some foam and fabric and get building. You'll learn just as much from the building as you do from the resources you read.
