Your first stop should be your local library to see what books they have.  I would bet that one of them is going to give you the basics for your joints.  See if they have "The Marionettes of Barcelona" ISBN 0951360027  or "Marionettes Onstage!" ISBN 0060141662  both give good basics and have diagrams that well be useful to you.  You have the hardest part down already... sculpting in wood.

You will find many people here who have the "Right Stuff" to help you with marionette building.  I am not one of them but welcome any way!!!
