I feel left out... Posted by AvenueQ on Feb 08, 2009
I love puppets. I have lots of puppets, but I've never made one. Do you have any suggestions, ideas tips, for making one?

Some people turn their nose up at the suggestion, but you can get an awful lot of mileage out of basic sock puppets. Many popular puppets in the past were based on sock puppets, Like Shari Lewis's Lamb Chop. She just added arms and legs to the basic sock body. Jim Henson himself described Kermit the Frog as a "glorified sock puppet," (LINK), which just happens to be the name of a pattern now available from Project Puppet. I believe that is their least expensive pattern, and probably the simplest to start with. You can also use an actual sock, or the sleeve from a shirt or jacket, or sew a tube of the same dimensions out of fabric, closing one end and adding features for a face, arms and/or legs, and clothing or other accessories. If you're at all clever it stops looking like an old sock and takes on a life and personality of its own. I love sock puppets.

There are people here with lots of experience with the Glorified Sock Puppet pattern from Project Puppet. You can probably get some tips from them and the Project Puppet web site if you feel comfortable doing some light sewing...

By the way, welcome to the group.

Ditto to what Ron said. I learned so much about performance by having a group of kids take a bunch of tube socks, and decorate them into puppets. Then we all had to give our sock puppets names, describe their personalities, and do little impromptu plays with them. It was amazing what kind of life could be put into a white tube sock!

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff................. anything can be a puppet just let your imagination go. Just kitchen wooden spoon two wiggly eyes can make a delightful puppet. I agree with what Ron said.
