My puppet stand instructions Posted by cvzdesign on Feb 11, 2009

Here is a simple and inexpensive stand that I have built for the puppets I have been making.
I'm sure it could be adapted easily for other needs too.

Supplies:
Drill with a 3/4" spade drill bit
Saw to cut the pipe and board

3/4" PVC Cap  ($0.20)
1/2" x 3/4" PVC Adapter ($0.42)  the 1/2" side has threads on the outside to screw into something while the 3/4" side is smooth to let the pipe fit into it.
3/4" PVC Pipe (comes in 8' lengths for about $2.50?)
3/4" thick Laminated Countertop Scrap Board -intended for shelving (about $1.99?)

I got my supplies at Menards Hardware Store

Cut the laminate to the intended size - Mine is about 6" x 11" - that just seemed a good size based on the scrap board I had.
I believe I got 6 pieces out of the shelf I used so that would make the cost about $0.43 each.

Cut the pipe to length... I measured the pipe to my puppet, so this will vary.  About 18" was my height.
That would give you 5 or 6 out of that length of pipe  - about $0.50 each then.

Drill a hole in the center of the board, all the way through the board.  I found out that the hole needed to be just a touch bigger than this to get the adapter to screw in, so I moved the drill bit around in a circle to ream the hole just a little bit larger. - Just barely though.

Screw the small end of the PVC adapter into the hole until it is flush to the board.
Mine had a small tab that stuck out on one side, that I easily took off with the saw. I didn't want anything to get caught on it.

Put the pipe cap on one end of the pipe you cut.

Put the pipe into the PVC adapter that is screwed into the board

I didn't glue anything together, because this way I could take the pipe with the cap out of the adapter and store it flat if needed.

So when I add up the costs..
$0.20
$0.42
$0.43
$0.50
These cost me about $1.55 USD to make.

This concerns me Sonny.............. One of your puppets emailed me while you were sleeping and ask if they could come stay with me and ask if I would pay for a bus ticket. Don't you think UPS would be cheaper.

Nice, I'll have to try this myself. Although I have to admit, I'd really love some instructions on making stands that also include an attachment to keep puppet mouths closed. It would be very helpful for making professional photos.
