Brian the Brain Puppet Posted by Sonny on Feb 13, 2009
Hello Crew,

Heres a latest puppet I made for an 8th teacher in Santa Ana. She requested a Brain Puppet. I did some extensive research (google..lol) and tried to replicate the human brain as much as possible. I should have took more pictures of the design, but I'm glad she will use it for her students.
I almost put the brain on the mouthboard backwards. Ok, no comments from the Peanut Gallery.

I named him Brian because 3 out 5 times I spell Brian, I spell it Brain.

He's a Foam and Latex covered puppet. Airbrushed and sealed.

Thanks for looking

Sonny

Looks GREAT!!  I am sure that the guys in her class will LOVE it!  It will certainly make the learning process memorable - Just another reason why all teachers should use puppets in their classrooms!

I love the spinal cord coming down to make the "body" of the puppet.  It looks like a pretty open cell foam that you used.  How do you keep the latex from being sucked up into the foam, or do you not worry about that?

Thank you for the compliments and comments.

Matt & Gav: Thanks for the comp. It's great to get feedback from fellow puppet makers.

Ron: Before I airbrushed him, he did look like a mound of pasta...Italian Zombies Manja Manja!

Billy: Youre so Punny..( get it? Puns + Funny = Punny!)..ok shoot me. lol

Na: Dont worry,....I packed it in ice when I shipped it.

Johain: They had that display here in Chicago. What gave me the willies was that some of those bodies were covered in tattoos. That really gave them a freaky human touch. It is truly a site to see.

LJ: Puppets in class rooms are fantastic. Its about the 4th puppet a teacher requested. Those are my favorite ones to make. Kids will pay more attention. Its a proven fact, look at Sesame Street. My eyes were glued to the tube.

Shawn: "It looks like a pretty open cell foam that you used.  How do you keep the latex from being sucked up into the foam, or do you not worry about that?"

Usually a nice first coat of latex will plug most of the holes. It's the second and third "touchup coat" that will give it enough solidity. On smaller pieces, I will generally saturated the whole piece on latex. I really am not concerned with filling all the holes completely. The puppet would be a bit heavy. I'm working on a Joe Friday Puppet and also am using the foam latex technique. I will be displaying more Process pictures here with that project. I really like this technique. If you notice the Brain's tongue, it looks rounded and full, That also was latexed and slowly worked by hand to round the edges and groove. It saves on the tiresome scissor clippings. That also will be posted here. Its a great way to make a good hand with round fingers.

Thanks again Friends,
Sonny
