Cool!  I'm pretty impressed with the rubble of goodies in the background too.    Is that remote to a TV?? You mean you have a TV in YOUR workshop?  I'm jealous. lol

If you notice the Brain's tongue, it looks rounded and full, That also was latexed and slowly worked by hand to round the edges and groove. It saves on the tiresome scissor clippings. That also will be posted here. Its a great way to make a good hand with round fingers.

If I'm understanding what you wrote, you were able to smoosh and shape the latex-impregnated foam like modeling clay, and it holds the shape? If so, that's fantastic! I've never heard of that technique before.

This thread should be entitled "Sonny the Brain!"

The teacher should be proud of this fine piece of work.  I guess this brain will be a teacher's pet!

"Smoosh" is a good word to describe what I do with the foam. It's a very timed process. Depending in how much latex you put on and what source of a dryer you have. Some pieces are soaked in my hand like a sponge others are hand applied in coats, usually heads are done with coats and you thin them out layer-wise as you go. The last layer is a touch up. But yes, It rounds out square edges very nicely if your patient. It is something I experimented with just by chance. I have never seen this technique anywhere, but I'm sure others have did the same somewhere. It just seems like they should be combined in some way.
I'll post some pictures on another thread.

Michele: Yes that is a remote control. It's either cartoons or black and white comedies. It really puts me in the right frame of mind when creating a puppet. (Good thing I cropped out my bong) ...
Those goodies in my workshop are wall to wall. I call it The Fuzz Blender, The Puppet Junkyard and Henson's Nightmare, but I do have a good handle on where everything is...

Stiq: She said she might send some pictures, that would be great and I'll post them.

Billy: Good Idea! How about a Brain Surgeon with an electric meat carver and thick glasses?

Tooner: Thanks bud! Coming from a skilled and talented puppet creator, that means alot.

Great, great stuff! I love latex skinning, I think it makes people relate to it as exactly that skin (or flesh in this case, brain tissue) Lovely, icky stuff to get kids in! Brilliant design, seeing how to turn something so complex into its basic, simplest, form. Love it, love it, love it!

P.S. Try liquid make up in your latex for really easy effective skin tones. Make sure you by the cheapest otherwise it gets too expensive but it's easier than mixing colour. You just have to work out your ratio of make up to latex to keep it consistent.
