How can I create long hair for puppet? Posted by mikepc on Feb 17, 2009
Hey everyone! Wow, what a cool site. So, I'm building my first puppet using the pinhead pattern. Basically, I need him to have realistic looking long hair. I just wanted to see if you guys had any ideas for the best way to do this. Do I order a wig? Is there a site you use to get good puppet hair? Thanks!

Welcome!! I have ordered wigs from various places to be used on puppets. I just sort of googled wigs and looked around till I found what I wanted for the price I wanted to spend. After Halloween sales are good too.
Have fun here and please post pictures when you get your puppets finished!!

Hello,
Second hand stores usually have wigs, just be careful you dont get one that someone used for 30 years...getting that Ben Gay smell out of them isnt worth it..haha. Otherwise try ebay.

Give me a little bit Of time I'm having trouble locating some information on hair that has been archived. Are you wanting yarn hair or it to look more human?

Hi Mikepc,
Another option is to use doll hair. I usually get mind at the dollar store. Very practical and it can be very realistic.
Good luck on your new puppet, as you will see, it is quite addictive to be here and to make puppets.

Since you are using a smaller size puppet you can easily get smaller size wigs at the Build a Bear store. They usually have little cuts to put the teddy bear ears through but you can sew them up very simple and now you have a nice little wig. They come in 3 different lengths. This might be one cheaper way to get what you want locally if you happen to have one of these stores in your neighborhood.
Good luck on your searches.....

Wow, these are all great ideas. Thank you so much guys! I'm actually looking for a more realistic human hair, so some of these ideas should be totally helpful.

If you're looking at realistic human hair, I recommend 'felting' wool. (That's what we call it in Australia, not sure if it's different in the US). I used it recently, and it comes out very realistic, and much cheaper than buying a wig. Plus you can style it however you want. Although the puppet I used it on isn't foam, it does give you an idea of what the wool looks like:
