Rit Dye and Air Brush gun Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Feb 24, 2009
Is it possible to use diluted liquid rit dye in a Air brush gun?

You probably could but the end result with the dye sticking properly to the material would be poor results....proper paints diluted would work best.

Hmmm... paint normally sets on top of a surface and dye, as a rule, locks on to the fibers of the fabric and changes the color. It may depend on the fabric you are coloring and you might get some bleed.  For some things it may be perfect. I say you should give it a try.   One thought I had was that wax is used in batik (not sure if I have the word right) to keep the dye from going where it is not wanted so an image or pattern can be created.  That may be something worth experimenting with also.

I have used rit dye in my airbrush to paint backgrounds on sheets. If you don't saturate the fabric it works well and doesn't bleed. As Shawn said dye locks onto the fibers so you wouldn't want to use it on a sized canvas.

I tried tomato soup in my airbrush once,....once. It doesnt work as well as chicken broth. That was my edible puppet line. It didnt last too long. Har Har!

lol edible puppets would be great.  No better way to end a puppet show then by taking a giant bite out of the puppet and saying GOOD NIGHT EVERYBODY!!!

For some reason my thought was not completed up above....my concern was that usually dye needs to be kept HOT to work properly.... my thoughts are by the time the paints hit the material it would be cooled down significantly because the air that pushes the paint out is cool.

But is seems that others have had success with it and that is all that matters.
