My first 2 puppets Posted by imy on Feb 28, 2009
puppets 002Just thought I'd post a pic or two of my first puppets. I'd love to eventually get into doing foam faced, larger puppets but until then, these guys made from scraps in the studio will have to do!

Here they are kicking back on MY studio chair. They are a little creepy to have around though. I wonder if they get up to anything on the stroke of midnight or something sinister like that     (too many movies for me!)puppets 001

Kinda does! He's my first puppet.
His face, hands, eyes feet etc are made from polymer clay. I make miniature fantasy dolls with the clay and had a big heap of old stuff laying around, so I made that puppet. He has a moving glove puppet style mouth and rod hands (the rods aren't in the pic).
I'm trying to get my hands on some foam and supplies so I can do some larger stuff... a bit like 'puppets by cher' (but not as professional I'm guessing!) because I'm loving her stuff... but I'm finding it hard to get my hands on stuff being out here in the bush... I'm about 200kms from the nearest largish town! I'm going to visit a furniture restorer around here and see if he has any foam off-cuts I could use to practice on.
Oh well, its not like I'm doing it professionally... just for a bit of fun and to use in my classes at a primary school... amazing how a puppet can make even the driest lessons suck kids into learning stuff!

If you like the sculpture part of the puppet, try making a mold of it and use latex. This way you could actually move the mouth just like a puppet.
