Peanut puppet Posted by tsu on Mar 01, 2009
Hi guys,

It has taken a while since I wrote about my first ever made puppet.
As some of you guys know, I "got into" puppetry because of some man and his puppet.
Since I saw him for the first time, I've felt I want to have a puppet similar to his.

Maybe it is not correct for some of you, but I have never supposed to get any profit or benefits from making that puppet --- I just wanted to make it for myself, for my own use. I obviously know about copyrights too and needless to say I respect them and I do not intend to break them in an illegal way.
It's just my "version" of that puppet.

I would like to say that *he* was my motivation to start with the puppetry. I didn't know anything about that kind of art before I've decided to build *him*. I even didn't know what to start with, what kind of material I suppose to use, completely nothing. So I started to read, I found this forum, I bought books.
Everything has its beginning in my desire to have *my own puppet/mascot/whatever* that looks like *him*, so I surfed the Internet looking for anything "suitable". I saw an official product and said to myself: "no, no, it does not look like *him* (got idea here)  ~~I know! I'll build him, haha!".
Sounded OK, but the problem was: "the heck, how?!" --- and there was a start.

I will not put any photos of that puppet now, I would like to ask you all guys first, if I'm allowed to.
I was speaking to Billy and he was OK with it, I know that Shawn has nothing against too, but I would like to hear from others as well.
If there will be more negative than positive voices, I give it up.

Cheers,
Iza

I am a little confused by your question at the end....are you asking.....if we would be offended if you posted pictures of your puppet because it is based on another puppet?  Or are you concerned that people will give you negative feedback on your first puppet?

I am fine with you posting pictures of your puppet even if it is based on another puppet and I know this group is very supportive with up and coming puppet makers.....you will be very much supported.

I hope that clears things up.....

Both.
I mean --- I know some people here do not like "replicas"/"copies"/"puppets with resemblance" that's why I was asking. I do not like to creep with some stuff into area where that "something" is not really wanted or even banned, if you know what I would like to say.
I'm not sure if everybody will feel fine when I show copyrighted puppet.
And a little bit of second part too --- I would not like to read the essays about illegality of my work, that I should not build that puppet because this and that, that somebody wants to hang me now.
OK, fooling around.

That's good you wrote that part:

Ah, by writing "both" to your:
are you concerned that people will give you negative feedback on your first puppet?

I meant --- not negative comments on my puppet as a whole, as how does it look like, but "negative comments" regarding to "copyrighted puppet".

I think the line of producing replicas or look a likes is drawn at the point when someone is doing it for profit or personal gain. I personally don't have a problem with making a puppet  that looks like someone elses. From a learning point it can be an adventure, and like your said the drive to build this puppet is what got you into puppet making.

Post it!

Personally, I want to see this puppet. Painters refine their skills by copying the masters of the past. I see no reason why that should not be for puppeteers as well. I hope you will post the pictures.

I Welcome your pictures Iza. Many new puppet builders are inspired by another pro-builder, performer, or both. The inspiration of others is what inspires new artist. I don't want you to feel uncomfortable about your artist interpretation of Jeff's character " Peanut" I admire you as a beginning puppet builder and your desire to take on such a challenge. You building a puppet of this nature with very little instructions and help from others took a lot of courage. I'm sure you learned more from this build than any pattern will ever teach you. I know that you only have good intentions and that you are looking at your work from a artistic stand point.
I'm inviting others to view your work with a artistic stand point as well and not from a negative way of thinking.
With that said........................ Let us see this wonderful creature. Folks I have got to say I have been following this project from the side lines threw verbal contact with Iza................... I have not seen pictures of the build or the final product, but am so excited the time has come and we get to see the finished Peanut.
