LED Source Posted by mineallmine on Mar 04, 2009
Hello,

I am brand new here and found this board through the recommendation of a classmate. I am taking a puppet making class. I am creating a tiki puppet and want to have glowing eyes. I thought of using LEDs before but have never worked with them. I was wondering if there was a good source to buy them. Id like them to be battery operated. Red or Green would be great.

If anyone can provide any help Id really appreciate it!

Thanks!

I did a Google search

Would Christmas lights work ?

You can try a robotics shop, gag gift shop or animatronics store.

Hi, welcome to the group!

I wasn't sure if you already knew, but LEDs aren't interchangeable with traditional incandescent bulbs. They need to be wired differently - incorporating a resistor between the power source and one leg of the diode, and can't just be wired directly to a battery like a flashlight bulb can. For that reason you might do well to buy some that are pre-wired, rather than loose LEDs. Sometimes the color in LEDs aren't very strong, and sometimes the "bulbs" themselves aren't very bright. I know that on the Make magazine site and on instructables.com there are tutorials for working with LEDs.

Google is your friend. Do some homework and see what you can learn. Maybe someone with experience using LEDs for puppet eyes will be able to give you more information.

Good luck, and welcome again!

PS
I LOVE tikis, and am eager to see your design.
