Little dots on the antron =( Posted by gav on Mar 07, 2009
I've never dyed antron before and it's a learning experience for sure.  OK First time I made a yard the fleece had little red dots on it.  SO I figured out I wasn't letting the dye powder dissolve properly.  Then I followed  what Billy said on another post and strained it with a cloth.  I had one or two random ones come up and that's it.  So I was happy I got it worked out.  Then after letting it dry I notice tons of random yellow spots all over the fleece.  I tried another yard thinking I know what happened.  Nope the second yard has the same issue.  What sucks about it is it doesn't show until it drys a bit.  So I keep thinking I'm OK then BAM!! ruined fleece.  I say that because no matter how much I dye the piece the yellow spots show.  This stuff isn't cheap so I don't want to mess up any more fabric.  Anyone have any ideas on whats happening. It's making me sick to my stomach   that I have this great fleece now that is partially unusable :'(

Gav
This discussion has come up before............ in another thread. Dans Puppets ordered the same Antron from me and dye packs and had no problem.
I'm going to dye some fabric tomorrow.................. and see if I have the same issues. Just hang on................ and we will figure it out.

Yes I was out most of the day with Family and had to baby sit a two month old baby while my sister worked so I was not at my computer. I'll get back with you tomorrow. I know how frustrated you may be but you have to have patience when dyeing any type fabric.  I have not dyed from the fleece lot but will let you know how it turns out and make pictures.

Im regulary dying the fleece I bought from Billy with no problem at all.
You should always test it first on a small piece of your antron.
Is your water hot enough?

Is it possible to see a picture of what these spots look like? If it happens to me I'll take a picture and figure out a solution. Just right off the top of my head I'm thinking the fabric was not thoroughly saturated and wet before dyeing. Every fiber in the cloth has to be wet........................ I'm also thinking there may be a finish on the fabric so I'm going to machine wash my fabric first before dyeing and see if that helps.

I'm about to head out now but i'll take a pick when I get back if needed.  It was deffenetly not a water saturation issue. I soaked it fully in the shower from top to bottom.

With the next endeavor make sure you start new. Could it be there is something "left" in the pot your use to dye in?  Try dyeing in another pot.  Maybe one of the batches of dry dye are bad or old and affecting things. Perhaps try new boxes of dye if you have access to them.   I have no idea what it is, I am just guessing based on some experiences with other fabrics and dyes in the past and not getting even dye process.

I'm in the process of dyeing as we speak  from what I can see the spotting may be caused by dye granules in the dye bath. After filtering the dye twice I still had a couple tiny bits of spotting. I resolved that issue by vigorously working the cloth with my hands much like agitation of a washing machine would do. I'm putting together a tutorial that I will include here as P&S and will send out with future purchases.
Gav I would try putting the cloth back in a hot dye bath consisting of hot water and work the spots out...................... I'm not sure if you drying the fabric if it is possible. At this point the dye  may have permanently set. In this case to save your fabric and these are light skin tones.................... you can dye that piece of fabric a darker color.
I will have the tutorial ready this afternoon.
