Newbie Here Posted by eleytenx on Mar 11, 2009
Hello everyone. I'm new here to the site. Been enjoying reading up on how to make puppets. I have made a few animal puppets for our church and I am now trying to make a people puppet with foam. Not so easy but I am learning. I think I am now addicted to puppets!! I really need to make this puppet so I can sleep at night. I do have a question though what is the easiest tool to use to cut foam with that is just begining.

Thanks

To cut foam, you could use electric knife, razor blade(Sharper), scissor. Myself work with sharp scissor and razor blade!

Welcome!  Can't wait to hear more about what you do!!   And an electric knife is THE easiest way to cut foam!  Slices through it like butter!!

I have to agree with LJ and Miguel I have both single edge razors and a electric knife on hand. My next thing to get is a hot wire foam cutter.
Welcome to Puppets and Stuff........... and we do like to see pictures around here.

Another tool I use is an x-acto knife.  It works great for me I would suggest throw away cutters such as razors or the x-acto knife idea since you can replace the blades cheaply.  The electric knife is used more for cutting blocks (not sheets) of foam to a head or nose size....then you do some big sculpting with the electric knife until you get it down to using scissors for detail scultping.  You need to watch with the electric knife it will get dull quickly (foam does that easily to sharp objects).....I don't think you can buy knife blades separately so you would have to replace the whole appliance.

Thank you for the suggestions. I just got the DAP Cement Glue last night at the hardware store so All I need now is some foam to cut and some fleece for the body. I had bought some thick felt but not sure if that will work for the body or not. I will have to play around with this some this weekend. And I did see the Hot wire foam cutter that looks like a really cool tool.

Just make sure you have great ventilation when using the hot wire.....foam is made up of nasty chemicals that can do harm to your body and mind.
