Pasha Romanowski built a very nice Spike Lee puppet with mechanical eyes. He posted pictures and a video on www.puppethub.com. He even includes a few photos of the interior mechanics.

I saw this before and it is a fine piece of work......the mechanism inside of the head seems complicated but at the same time very simple (which I am sure it isn't).
