Falcon Puppet Posted by invisime on Mar 18, 2009
I will be playing a medieval falconer in a larp soon, and as I don't have the ability to learn to handle a real falcon, I need to purchase or make a realistic looking falcon puppet. It needs to have the ability to perch on my arm, perch on its own, and possibly be stowed in some concealable bag or such on my person. Any ideas?

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff. Do you have a local zoo in your area that you could consult with ? Most zoos have a avian specialist. I would check with your local wildlife or game warden for help to.
I use to raise small birds but owned larger birds like umbrella and moluccan cockatoos. They can be hard to handle and unpredictable at times. I can just imagine handling a raptor.
I would start with the glove................... fill a two liter bottle with water or something like that and learn to balance in on your arm as if it was big unruly bird on your arm. You may want to check You Tube

I think I may have been unclear in my intentions. I don't wish to actually use a real falcon, I intend to use a puppet. However, I have no idea where to acquire a suitably realistic looking puppet nor of how to make one myself. The puppet will be used during the game and needs to be able to:
perch on my arm
perch on a specifically designed perch unattended
and be concealable on my person when necessary.

I thought I understood perhaps not. I thought that you would be using a prop or puppet and wanted to learn more about the handling of falcons to make it look realistic. Do you want someone to build this for you or are you looking to build it your self? They are many talented builders here.................. we have had many discussions on building different type bird wings. I have not seen anything but toy like puppets such as eagles, toucans, and such on the internet. This will have to be a custom build.
I would think that you would still have to research some to make the puppet look realistic.

I found this little fellow Message Image
He cost $29.99 US and I know he isn't a Falcon but he should be easy enough to modify.

Then if you are going for the Rolls Royce model how about splashing out $5,000.00+ US for this little bloke.

Have you looked through Axtells web site?
They have a heap of birds and even a cool arm affect that makes the bird look like it is perched on your arm.

Hi,

once I made three birds for a schoolplay. They are easy to make. If you want to know how let me know. Here a tape of them in action.

Mr. Johan! You did those? Great! Could you tell me or teach me how to do one of them!, Please.

The place where I go to meet as church, will do a puppet drama (Actually more than one), and will need one of that character (Will do pilgrim's progress).

Thanks again

Miguel!
