I put this guy together in a couple of days. No finesse here; lots and lots of generous duct tape use! I used the cheap foam "visors" that are available for $1.00 each at most craft stores for the mouth, and glued to hollow styrofoam half-spheres. I took pictures of the build, and you can peruse the photo stream here:

That is just too cool!  I really love it when someone comes along with a new approach to building a puppet. You should be able to find the material you made the mouth plate out of in craft stores.  They call it Funky Foam in most locations.  You can buy it in sheets and it is pretty cheap. Did you find the half-spheres already hallowed out or did you have to hallow them?  I am not sure I have seen them hallowed out before.

Great Job!

Thanks, Shawn! Yes, I found the "hollowed out" styrofoam at a craft store near me (Southern CA) called, "Tall Mouse"

Generous use of duct tape. Now that's a West Virginia way of puppet building. (Q: What's one sentence you will never hear in West Virginia? A: You can't fix that with duct tape.)

He's looking good!
