I just have to tell you all about a beautiful thing that happened to me when performing the Tall Ted Easter Magic show at the local hospital yesterday.
They had me set up in the kids play room which was a huge room with a fish tank big enough that Nemo would never be found in. I set up and looked out at all the seats they had arranged and wondered what the spaces between the chairs were for.
As it neared show time only a handful of children were in the room. Deep down I thought this will be strange performing to so few, spread out in such a big space. Still I thought it doesn’t matter, just give the show your all even if the room is half empty.
But as I started with the opener, Flowers from a Hat, I turned to see the double doors fly open and hoards of children in wheel chairs and hospital beds being wheeled into fill the gaps right on cue.
By the time I started my second elusion, Rope to Silk the place was full and buzzing. Looking out at all the kids beaming I noticed a blind girl and that a nurse was telling her just what was going on.
This child was not smiling as she was listening intently to the nurse and visualising the show in her mind. I handed the rope out to the kids for inspection and when I got to her I waited for her to touch it as a rope and then changed it to a silk within her hands.
The smile that she gave will live with me forever as the show had become a tangible reality for her. The show went on and with every item I produced I handed over to my blind friend so she could see with her hands what the rest were reacting to.
This child made me realise that we practise our routines again and again but sometimes you just have to throw away the patter and go with the flow.
