Dying faux fur Posted by gav on May 15, 2009
My next puppet project i'm working on requires for a slightly dirty blond look.  I have some white faux fur that is the perfect style and length.  Problem is it's bright white.  I was curious if I could dye it some way to the color I need?  I can't find the type of hair or colored fur I need so I have to get resourceful.

Faux fur is normally synthetic and does not take dye very well... That being said I have been able  to get some color into them in the past.  Try tea or coffee staining it. Might end up just the color you want.

stay the color in the fabric than, I don't that kind of dye (or unions) because I expected that the color is getting away during the time you use it.

Coffee and tea staining does not normally fade (go away).  They do not always color the fabric strong to start with.  It depends on the fabric how well it works.

What you could do is take only small pieces of your fur and makes different tests and write your results down in a kind of notebook for future references. Maybe that could be usefull for you.

Here is a video from You tubes " Hellyers " on dyeing faux fur. He uses the Dylon brand dye.

I would caution before dying your fur (he says it in the video but I want to stress) if you put fake fur in hot water the fur will turn out like cookie monster fur.....like it has been distressed.......his fur is very short but longer will curl up.  If you look at my blogtv shows the purple monster with big red nose has the hot water put on it's fur to make it look that way....it was originally very furry and fluffy......just a thought as you may proceed.  If you want to try and keep it fluffy like it is you might be able to get away with warm water which makes the dying process less successful at times.

Nice video find Billy!   It really shows the process and what you can expect in the end when dying fur.  I'll say it again just like Daryl did... If you dye in a hot bath your fur will end up "scrunchy".   Not always a bad thing depending on the puppet you want to make.

I think Shawn has the right idea.If you want to give it a dirty or old look use tea or coffee.I would suggest the tea.
