The Art of Hair Rooting Posted by Billy D. Fuller on May 15, 2009
Vampire Wombat gave us a great demonstration last night on stig puppets live on rooting hair in latex and foam. He will be following up with a detailed tutorial. Meanwhile I thought you might be interested in hair rooting primarily used in doll making and reborning.

Here is a video clip from a tutorial from Secrist Dolls........... showing how to root a doll

He also showed how to make a rooting tool used to root the hair into the head. These are also available at doll supply stores and come in different sizes...... depending how much hair you want to root. I bought a set but have not used it.

Does this method only work for latex puppets? I tried it on a foam and fabric puppet and the hair just pulled right out. I need help to add hair to my latest puppet. I want to use the long hair extenstions but don't know what is the best way to add it to my puppet.

Not sure how well it is going to work for you on foam and fabric. One reason it works well on latex is that once the hair is "pushed" into the latex it compresses around the fiber. Foam is not going to do that. What you might be able to do is glue the hair on the underside once you push the hair through. Could be a tough go since as a rule the head is finished off when you get to the point of adding hair.

You might have better luck ventilating the hair on to a loose weave fabric and then sewing or gluing that to the head. There is a recent post that shows this process... I'll see if I can find it. You can also sew the extensions to fabric strips and apply them to the head that way.

Sara said that she tied the strands of yarn onto the wig cap weave.  You can use a latch hook or small crochet needle to "hook" the hair onto the lace.  Lace is what they call it in a wig shop.   Double your hair in half and then catch one or two strands with the hook after you have pushed through one of the holes in the lace. Then bring those loops back through the lace just a bit.  Then push forward and catch the strands on the other "side" and pull the hairs through the loop.  Voila you have a knot!
