I'm not sure which pattern you mean since I've seen 2 or 3 that could be used to make something similar to Elmo.
I'm sure Billy or someone else will know what you mean, though.
But I thought I'd welcome you since this is your first post here.

Here is a pattern you might be able to modify. It is from Puppet Building.com

Shawn, the Blue Boy pattern is one of them I was thinking of. But the website I got it from (in September it seems) seems to be shut down.
This pattern could possibly be modified to work also:

nlace,
check out my gallery, I've made three elmo's now! not making any more! but also look for a forum thread on here called "placing the mouth for a permanent smile" to make sure you get the right shaped mouth. You'll see E1 had a grim expression.
I don't have much time to explain right now or to paste in links but have a look and see what you think. There is a "tutorial diagram" about getting the mouth right, but you'll see that the fabric is basically round when flat in 2D and the mouth distorts it into, almost, a football shape (no not soccer ball the other pointy foot ball.)
my diagram doesn't show the shape I used for a mouth board. I arrived at it by trial and error but you should be able to work it out from the photos and drawings. I'd just say don't make it too round, again more like a "pointed football."
The general method I used to make it follows the famous "expert village videos" which you can find on you tube or as a "sticky" subject (stays at the top) in the puppet building forum on this site. Then I modified the mouth plate fairly heavily and discovered the way of cutting a smile, as you will see.
Sorry I can't make the links easier to find but I've been here too long already!
