It's not a stupid question. Memorial Day is an American holiday in which we honor and commemorate those who have lost their lives in military service. Officially it is on May 30, but it is usually moved to the last Monday in May so that people can have a three-day weekend.

We also pay tribute to the innocent civilian Men, Women, and children who have lost there lives due to a war.

In addition for some it is Hamburger and Hot Dogs. BBQ ribs........... and the official kick off of Summer Vacations.

O I see We have a day like this in Holland 4Th may. We remember those who lost their lives during the second worldwar. Mostly their are old soldiers here from America, Canada, Britain. But I have to say the numbers are increasing by the years. Now we also remember those who lost their lives in military action somewhere on the world. This day called here dodenherdenking (death remembering) Flags are halfway. On 20.00 we have 2 min of silence, flowers put to monuments from the war. There is an official flower seremony by the queen in Amsterdam. After the 2 min silence the flags going to the top for next day libaration.
We don't have bbq or have a feast. Next day 5th may it is national liberation day. The day world war two ended. In Wageningen where liberation declaration was signed is a parade with trucks, company of several soldiers etc etc (I live in the next town from Wageningen, Ede 5 km away) once in the 5 years in is a national free day for all. Every year it is a free day for schools and some working people.

In November 11 (11 month, 11 day, 11 hour, 11 minutes we have a moment of silence for all those soldiers who died for our country) we (Canadians) call this day Remembrance Day this is the day that we remember all the people who died for our free country in wars.   The holiday I was talking about has different meaning at this time I don't really know but we mainly focus on getting ready for the summer.  I hope that clarifies it a little more for you on the difference.  It sounds like you celebrate the May 4 as we would celebrate Nov 11 each year.
