Many of you may be aware of Andrews puppetbuilding.com site but did you know he has at least two other great sites?

PuppetVision Blog is a great place to keep up on the news about puppetry in video and film from around the world.  Andrew seems to be connected in with about just every puppet site out there and seems to write almost every day about something he has found on one of them. That is where I learned about this sweet little gem on YouTube.

Machin-X: Digital Puppetry reflects Andrews interest in real-time animation.  While his post are not as often on this blog there is some great information there on computer puppetry.

I was really impressed with that video. Is it all digital or are there really marionettes used in it?

I don't think those are marionettes, I'm pretty sure they were performed Bunraku-style and the puppeteers were digitally removed from the shots.

Really? They seem very marionette like to me (but I defer to those who have more experience).

Watching it again, they could very well be marionettes in some shots. Some of the movements, especially with their heads, would be really difficult to achieve with marionettes. There's also a lot of compositing, which wouldn't be necessary if you were using marionettes so I made an assumption based on that. They definitely try to make them marionette-like.

Maybe they were a blending of techniques? The heads seem like they are done as hand puppets or Bunraku-style a lot, but the arms look almost like they were on strings. I wish there was a "making of"!

Well, whatever they did, I thought it was excellent. (And better than Mamma Mia)
