Patterning Foam Body Posted by Gabriel G on Jul 15, 2009
Hey everyone,
As some of you know, I'm currently working on some sheep puppets.
I want to get a nice round oval shape for the body and planned on patterning it with the "wedge" method. However, I never got a chance to download the pattern shape from Andrew's PuppetBuilding.Com and it's been down for the past few days.
Does anyone have one they could e-mail me? Thanks in advance!

Also, if anyone has general information on foam body shapes and patterning different shapes and sizes, feel free to share!

I get different shapes by folding a piece of paper in half and then fold in half again. Starting from the folded center cutting outward to the outside of the paper.... somewhat like you would do for mouth plate shapes.

Shapes like a bowling pin, ovals, diamond, pear are prime examples.

@Billy Thanks for the link and thread links Billy, I had a feeling you'd come to my rescue!
And that's actually EXACTLY what I did to pattern one of the bodies, but what I made was a wide wedge with flat tops and bottoms and I made the bottom slightly wider and added a dart. Then I glued the four pieces together. This particular puppet is much more rotund in the body than the other characters so I knew I'd have to do it on my own.
But I also wanted to wortk with the wegde that I knew could give me a perfect sphere, I need to make the other bodies more oval shaped so am using less wdges.

@Gompie That's actually what I noticed myself! Inserting the triangle makes the character develop more of a "widening" in the stomach area.
