Ninja-style foam cutting nunchuks! Posted by CanuckAmok on Jul 23, 2009
Hey hey hey,

The title alone is enough to attract attention! Hot-wire cutters are fun, but I've found the table-mounted ones to be awkward, and the kind that look like hacksaws are limited in the size of foam that can be cut. Today, though, I found an Instructables.com article on how to make your own two-handed hot-wire foam cutting nunchucks! Cheap, too! WHO CAN RESIST???

No guarantees on the quality of foam cutting, but the added element of danger is alluring. High currents and hot wires flailing about should be a riot. I know what I'm doing this weekend...

This can give the ability to cut large free form pices of foam. Too bad I didn't have this 10 years ago when I had to build a coral reef out of styrofoam. It would have been so much easier.

Pictures of the tool as well as what you cut with it are an absolute must.

I actually had to visit family this weekend, so I wasn't able to engage in any dangerous DIY projects. However, mysteriously and coincidentally my wife's hairdryer died yesterday, thus providing me with the heating element I was missing. (Insert maniacal laughter: Mwahahahahahaa...)

If and when the nunchucks are done, I'll post pictures of some incredibly well-cut foam pieces, plus maybe a few of my open burn wounds. I wonder if they'll work on cheese and bread, too?

When/if  you get this thing working i would love to know the rate at which it cuts through the foam....I recently bought a new mattress.....they wanted me to give them a hundred dollars and the old mattress when they showed with the new one....I said no thanks....And then proceeded to cannibalize the mattress...got several layers of high density foam, but some of it is to thick(2inches)...If this works i can adapt the design into a table top  cutter with an adjustable gate for cutting various foam thickness.......yay foam!!
