Canuck, either your typing with your toes or you have a ruler in your mouth....Puppet Brigade is on it's way.

Just remember - It all depends on what kind of a puppet youre making.
Is it human? Animal, vegetable, mineral?

Try a CD or a coffee can. Trace it and fold it in half. It's a start for average.

i totally agree with sonny , i really depends on what the puppet is going to be , if it was an aardvark for example, you might have a long mouthplate, but if it was a people puppet, the mouth might be alot smaller in circumference. it also depends on how big the hand of the puppeteer is, if its for you, then take your guideline from there and don't make it any smaller than your own hand, but if its for someone else, then you need the measurements of their hand. i know that Ive just made it sound more complicated than it actually is, but its really quite easy and personally id recommend never making the width smaller than 12 centimeters and possibly no shorter than 9 centimeters, and if it is a puppet for you, then if you are anything like me, then you like the 'hinge' of the puppets mouth to be snug in the crotch of your thumb, but long enough for you to be able to get your fingers all the way to the end of the little pockets on the mouthplate, i do this so that i can get all the movement and opening that i can possibly get out of the mouth, but still have an entirely comfy puppet to use!!! if i could give you a rough example of a good size puppet mouth, then i would say the width and length of a mini soccer ball (if you where hypothetically to cut one in half, the circle you would get, then folded in half, does that make sense??)
i really hope this helps in some way!!
Jeezbo.
