Puppet Jigs! Posted by Shawn on Aug 02, 2009
No, I am not talking about dancing puppets doing a jig. I am referring to the use of a jig as a tool.  Jigs are commonly used by woodworkers as a template when they are doing repetitive cuts with something like a jigsaw.  They are often "homemade" by the woodworkers themselves.  I've long used jigs in puppet making and wanted to start a thread on the subject.

The most common jig I've used is one to cut a piece of wood to a uniform length.  These are pretty easy to make.  It can be as simple as a 2X4 that is screwed or clamped to a work surface, that has a chop saw on it, that you then butt another length of wood up to and then cut it. Gives you the same length of wood every time.

So, what jigs to you use in your puppet making.  I have a few in mind that I plan to share over time but wanted to get the ball rolling.  Is there something you do over and over that could use a jig?  Don't let your self get stuck in the woodworking "box".  I feel that the  tool that Billy has shared for making puppet wigs out of yarn could fall under this category.

Mmm, I/we have a table saw... I have used it, not for puppetmaking tho, lol, I hate it, it scares me.
I take it you mean marionette type puppetry?

Doesn't have to be just marionettes.   I think all types of puppets could benifit from them.  While as a rule you would not use a table saw to build a muppet style puppet, it is possible if you are putting mechanics inside for moving eyes or such.  Table saws scare me too.... I think that is a good thing. Keep my fingers attached.

Would it be possible to have a picture of a Jig? So that we are all on the same page on that one?

I'm not sure that I've ever made something that would qualify as a jig, unless you count fabric patterns, but I have made a few tools to help me.  A thin piece of dowel with a sharp end and some shallow cuts with a dozuki helps me make long holes through foam rubber blocks.  A wooden spoon with a curved chunk taken out of the bowl makes peeling the annoying price tags off of doweling a cinch.  And a collection of short dowels of different thicknesses that are labeled helps me to measure the pieces I've used in a prototype.  That's all I've got.

Yes Abdolos, you have the spirit of what I was talking about. While technically some may argue that not all of those count as jigs I was looking for things that people have created to help them in puppet building.
