Although you would have to plug in your own numbers, and figure out your own goals, some of the factors that should be taken into consideration might be:
1. Is this website for making money? If the answer is no, there must be a very strong reason (imho) to pay anybody anything to use a name that they have just been sitting on.

2. If the answer is yes, then the first question would be, what cash flow to do expect to realize from this website, on an annual basis.

3. How many years do you want to amortize the cost of the domain name?

4. What kind of profit margin are you expecting from your website income?

5. What percentage of that income are you willing to invest in the domain name?

6. What are your start-up capital costs in addition to the domain name, and what are your start-up resources?

The answers to these questions are speculative, and personal. I'm not a big fan of folks who sit on a collection of domain names, waiting for someone to pay them big bucks for its use. They are in a very speculative venture, that gets in the way of folks like you that just want to get to work.

Matt's suggestion of creative punctuation might be a very good one if you can do it.

I have no idea how Shawn came around to the name of Puppetsandstuff.com. I know that I never googled it. I googled the phrase, "how to make a yarn puppet wig," and Billy's tutorial on this site jumped onto the screen, only a few entries from the top. I lurked for a week or two, and then introduced myself, just a year ago, yesterday. Content counts.

I came up with a title for my business: 3 p's: paper and puppet portraits. I like it, especially the 3 p's part cuz it's small and it will be really easy to do a logo with. But for the domain name, that was a bit more difficult. I am now thinking of going, not for a .com kinda name, but more into the .qc.ca kinda name since I am Canadian and I do live in the province of Quebec. But I still have so much searching to do. But thanks to all you guys, I now have precise questions to answer :D

True, I was also thinking of spelling 3 P's differently, like 3peez, or 3ps, or something like that. But my website will not be born until next year, I just have too much projects on my drafting table right now to build my website. Plus, the winters over here are so long, it will be a perfect opportunity to do my website, or at least the look of it, during those very long Canadian winter months.

Whatever you do, I think it's important to have the word 'puppet' or 'puppets' in the name. If the name is too unrelated to your content, then people won't click on it in searches. (ie. If I see 3peez, I'd personally think it's some kids website, or related to pez and misspelt... even if the link comes up in a search related to puppetry).

You might want to be careful about using free sites. Free domains come with lots of limitations on what you can/can't do, along with bandwidth and storage limitations. Many of them might not allow you to do backups, in case anything ever happens with their service, and some might be so laden with ad placements that it will put off visitors.

Not that there's anything wrong with free sites, just that you should do research on what they offer/what they don't before signing up.
