Another little way you can "hide" the seam is to actually use different colors, then the seam is simply a natural line between the two. I did this on my zebra puppet because it was next to impossible to get the print to line up. The only place that the print had to be sewn to itself was attaching the head to the body, so I gave her a flower lei to mask it. Everywhere else I used either the white or striped fur.

The white on the forehead, for example, is a single piece so there are actually two front seams where it attaches to the print but it isn't jarring like a seam can be. Of course I turned around and added yarn along the seam anyway, but I just liked the cartoon look that added. You can see that I did the same on the body (and ran out of time before I could add the yarn.) Since the time of the picture, I have also picked the seam on the pink to help disguise it a little more.

By the way, the striped print is a stretchy knit material, the white is flannel, the pink is fleece, and the mane is fur.

Hey Avenue....yes the nylon thread is certainly not made for seem hiding I have the same stuff I use in the textile arts but not in puppets making.  It seems that you got the answer you need....and I agree with puppet project that you can get an almost invisible seem from regular fleece.....just work on small stitches and consistency on repeating the stitch cleanly over and over again. 

I thought that either one of the ladder or baseball stitch was named the Henson stitch, I did not think it was a "special" stitch just a name we gave to an already developed stitch to our puppet hero.

No offense but im actually glad to know there is no henson stitch because it means i was doing a good job already, i havent used nylon when i practice stitching, instead i use differently colored string and yet i still manage to hide the seam! :D i used white on purple in the pics above and i now agree that nylon isnt nessesary.

And that's the best type of stitch to have. LOL 

For anyone who even remebers this post i would like to throw in that i have a stitch doll (the irony!) and its a very well made plush toy considering how old it is, I picked it up and noticed just how thin and straight the seams were and i thought WOW this would be amazing with fleece! so i was wondering if anyone knew how stitch was stitched :P even his little paws have a perfect seam thats as thin as string! he has a very interesting pattern and i can show more pics if you people want, he in fact looks like a puppet if you think about it. i wish i had the number of the person who made these at the factory

The stitch character was probably machine sewn.  In fact, if you take the time to pick out the knap of the fabric you can hide a machine sewn seam.

aw well thats a buzzkill, CURSE YOU MACHINESSSSSSSS! i could never tear apart my stitch but if i find a doll like it ill take that one apart to study

Picking the seams is to use a pointed instrument to lift the knap that was captured when the fleece was sewn.  If you do this the knap will stand up and at least partially hide the presence of the seam.  Professional puppet builders do this even when they hand stitch a seam.
