my glorified sock pattern attempt Posted by BiZcut on Aug 22, 2009
so my first attempt at making a puppet was after watching the vids on youtube and i didnt have any idea what i was doing so i grabed a rag out of the drawer and freehanded the patteren and came up with
i loved playing with him but the head is lopsided and i wanted to get into puppetry a bit more seriously so i broke down and got ahold of the golrified sock puppet pattern and gave it a go
i did get some ping pong balls that i think i am going to attempt to make eyes with as using the goggly eyes makes "facing" the puppet a bit rough for a newbie like myself.
i would like to ask tho if you puppeters think this guys is up to scratch as i have applied to be part of my churchs ministry team and will most likely BE the puppet ministry bymyself so i will be making my own puppets and so on. any advice would be great as well as comments. thanks

Both of them look very nice. One thing to remember, in puppet making, there is no wrong way. The question is always, did you get what you want? Methods and materials are as varied as the makers.
I really like your bath towel puppet. He looks a little like a worm cab driver. His "roughness" is exactly what gives him character.

I agree. They are great. Your children's pastor will be greatly pleased, a willing soul as well as a puppet builder!!
Good job.

I'll ditto the replies. Both are "up to scratch" as you say and you should be proud of them. The ping pong eyes are a good idea and well make your puppets really POP!

BiZcut,
Those are both very good starts into the world of puppet making. However, don't be afraid to modify and add more to them. It's amazing how many different characters can be made simply with the Glorified Sock Puppet Pattern. It is certainly one of the more often used patterns in my building. It's simple, quick and effective, yet with the addition of hair, different eyes, eyebrows, noses, ears, teeth and various costumes... You could populate a whole puppet universe with that deceptively simple patten!

Try the simple series new body add-on. I really like it and it fits the build- a bear costumes. I like the looks of your puppets so far. Don't be discouraged if you are the puppet ministry team (Been there, done that, Drafted the older children to help and they really loved it.)- Steve
