How do I finish this puppet Posted by Scurvy Dave on Aug 24, 2009

Picture 002

Hi all,

I'm new to the boards...and I was hoping I could get some advice with this puppet I'm building.  He's actually a little further along than these pictures show...his head has been sewn to his body.  Right now...the head and body are the only two pieces.  My plan is to use the Project Puppet alternate body pattern (scaled up a bit) to add some structure and shape.  My question is...what's the best way to attach it?  Should I hot glue it to the fabric? Do I need to make a sleeve?  I can't wait to finish this guy, but I want to do it right.  Thanks!

First I would like to Welcome you to Puppets and Stuff. I Love your puppet project and it seems to be coming along just fine. It appears to me that you are going to make it with arm gloves. So if the head opening is at the bottom I would add a sleeve to the head using a stretch spandex and have it coming out of the bottom of the body ........... your body should look like this picture below.

Thanks to Andrew from Puppet Building.com for use of the picture.

I finished it!  Thanks to Billy again for pointing me in the right direction. I have to say, Im very happy with the way he turned out.  I made the mistake of not using a razor to cut the fur...which resulted in some of the pile being cut short at the seams...but this is only my second puppet, so Im not beating myself up over that kind of thing.  In case any of you are interested, heres the breakdown of how I went about building him-

Modified this pattern http://www.flickr.com/photos/puppetvision/563798893/ for the head, then stuffed the skull with polyfill.  I used the project puppet method of mouthplates, modified to fit my pattern.  The tooth is a carved piece of packing foam.  The eyes are those felt sticky things for the bottoms of chairs stuck on a piece of ping pong ball.  The arms are based on the pattern that Billy posted above, and the body is the project puppet ss alternate body scaled up 120%.  There is also a spandex sleeve inside the body.  Couldnt have done this without this forum.  Critiques and criticisms are welcome.

I love this puppet!  I haven't really made a monster puppet yet.  He has inspired me to.

Wow..very colorful puppet. I like the colour
What is his name??

I felt since the head is just plain you can add some
contrast colour fur near eyes like an eyebrow or
some wool for the head..sort of hanging..just to
add that extra bit...

Happy birthday Dave.

Cheers
