I forgot to post the making of our puppets this year but better late than never!!! So if you have a puppet that you entered in Project Puppets 2009 Contest please post your puppet and a brief description! Anything you think that was important to the building process. I myself hade made a puppet previously for a Jane Goodall Project. So my JUNGLE animal was a chimpanzee named Mark the Monkey! Ill have pictures posted soon!! Enough about me, here at P&S we want to hear what you guys came up with! Well mostly me!

Well, I guess I'll be the first to post pictures then. This is Kamal, he's a Malaysian Tapir. I don't think I took any progress pictures. He's made using the pinhead pattern.

Great puppets you two. Love the tapir, he has captured the essence of the animal perfectly. Can't wait to see more of the puppets entered into the contest. I was not able to make one this time around. Hopefully next time.

I couldn't do anything either. I had to travel and then I got sick. I started it, but it take me few more days to finish it at all. Well, next time.

I also got an entry in, I was so happy to actually be able to make a puppet - I simply haven't had much opportunity this past year.

Thanks for starting this thread - I do so enjoy getting to see everyone's wonderful work, and I am always glad that I am not a judge so that I don't have to make decisions. Nice work on the two I've seen and hopefully there will be more posted.

I used the pinhead pattern as my basis for Zinnia the Zebra, who loves flowers and swinging on vines and just doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the herd. Though she isn't the brightest gal out there (surprisingly) she does have an inner glow all her own (especially in the blacklight.)

I have had this zebra print with the hot pink highlights for several years now and have been meaning to make something with it, so when I saw the contest, it was my first thought. I started out using the glorified sock puppet pattern with a remnant of fleece and decided I didn't want to rely too heavily on the material, I also wanted a good head shape as well.

Then I bought the pinhead pattern and made a paper towel model out of the head pieces just to get a good idea of the resulting shape, and still wasn't happy. I managed to waste a few hours trying to decide on a different creature until my niece walked in and picked up the model, putting her hand through the mouth opening instead of the neck opening and suddenly it started coming together. A ball cut in half for the cheeks added a lot to the head shape.

I had originally planned on using just a pink mane but when I was digging through my fabric boxes to come up with a different critter, I pulled out the striped fur thinking that I might make a bird or something instead. The two fabrics met in a jumble on my desk and I decided I liked it. The eyes were also a result of different parts ending up in contact as I was pushing things out of the way (I have a minuscule work area - tends to get cluttered quickly.)

There are a few more things I would have liked to do, but I ran out of time. I cut the pieces out Thursday morning and would have had enough time if the opportunity to go to One Way Street's training event near my sister's house (5 hours away) had not suddenly come up, taking a good deal of my weekend away. I can't say I regret going to the event, though, and I am mostly happy with the results.

I did learn a couple things, such as keep a child handy for those times when you need inspiration and get things early enough that the models are still awake because it is hard to get good pictures by yourself.

Since this was my first time entering, I am curious...does anyone know what procedure they will follow when they post the top ten finalists? Do they send out an email so that we know that it is time to vote, or will they  update the contest site, or make an entry into the news feed on the main site, or maybe change the contest logo?

Yes, I admit, I am trying to resist refreshing everything every ten minutes, but at least if I know where to look then I only have to refresh one page. 

I entered the contest to get back into puppet making and since I already had the Glorified Sock Puppet pattern, it was inexpensive. Assuming there would be many animals, I went a different direction and made a pygmy.

Mutoe Matutu (Pygmy Phil) is from the Aka tribe of central Africa. Mutoe left his tribe to attend missionary school in Minneapolis. After graduating as valedictorian of his class of two (the other student having failed Phys-Ed),Pygmy Phil, as he was now known, started his own business, Pygmy Phil's African Adventure, where he guides rich touristspast the edge of civilization, to experience the dangers of jungle life, all for an exhorbitant fee. Of course, on occasion, a tourist or two does get misplaced, after all, Phil did start life as a cannibal.
