My son attends WVU in the puppetry department. He will graduate next May - as an out-of-state student the tuition was higher than for in-state students but he was granted a full tuition waiver scholarship based on his puppetry skills and also had an academic scholarship so it ended up being quite inexpensive.   He could not get everything finished in four years because the puppetry/creative dramatics degree is actually a double major, but the scholarships only lasted for 4 years. Oh well - we got by very cheaply for the first four years!  He has gotten a very good education and the puppetry and theatre department has some very good professors.  His education has been very well-rounded in all areas of the theatre so he will be very qualified for any children's theatre.
Check it out and let me know if any of you have questions I would be happy to put you in touch with my son. And he would love to be able to help the department grow!

My son is hoping to get a job at a theatre somewhere. He knows of opportunities in a number of cities, but he has also not crossed grad school of the list of possibilities.  He will be sending out resumes and applications this year. He is also looking at a couple other possibilities that would be a bit different - one of which will depend on if he and his brother get accepted to do a cross-cultural study in Japan learning Bunraku puppetry during the summer of 2010.  Yes, lots of "ifs" but that is the way it is right now in any field!
