My brand spanking new project! Posted by AvenueQrazy on Aug 28, 2009
(Warning: this is a loooong and detailed post!)
I am finally starting my next puppet after much planning and even more random trips to tje craft store.
I was originally going to make a puppet version of Jessica rabbit way before i made nicky.
Because i fell in love with Avenue Q i thought that i'd make Lucy or Kate instead, whilst building Nicky.
But after my experience with making Nicky i realised i have enough of a knack at making my own puppets that i looked through my big pile of charachter drawings to see if i had any thing that i could use for a new one.
I found a headshot of a cartoon goth chick done in pencil, i thought it would be the perfect thing for a very creative and original puppet. So i started drawing a version of it that would be possible to make and came up with this:
I love dem goths anyways, theyre the most fun to hang out with at lunch. and they are the type of people that appreciate strange and artistic things like this so i got all the ingredients ( including pnp's insight) and as of today started to build it!
this is how i make blueprints/accurate sketches so i know whait it might look like in advance
heres the foam patterns i made:
that was the arms, it'll make sense later...
and this is the supply space in my workroom. ill be working on this every friday and possibly saturday so just stay tuned!

Nice layout of your plan of attack and sketches of the end result. Looking forward to your progress on this each week.

Nice planning, I'd love to see the updates, Don't let them get in the way of the actual creative process though, when you are n a roll don't stop to look for the camera or wait till the battery is charged. I agree Nicky is so good, make your own now, I made a couple of Muppet recreations when I got back into puppet making (used to use a different method) and also realised that I had done them easily enough to make my own and it was so much more rewarding!
I'm not very good at documenting them though!

what i really need to know is how do i make that white tooth line and do i put the foam and fleece for the lips ontop of the first later of fleece or put the foam on first and cut the base fleece where the foam is so i can sew the red fleece around it?

You will add the lips on top of the base fabric. As for the teeth, I use "Fun Foam" to make my teeth. I cut the foam in a rectangle to just longer than I want my teeth to be. Draw a slight curve from one bottom corner to the other, making sure your curve is the same from the center point. Glue the curved side in your puppets mouth just behind the lips. Hope this makes sense.
Shawn: Sure would be nice if there was an ap to allow free drawing right into the reply.

Update!!!! its kinda small but i wanted to spend another day on my project.
this is the........bosom patern, its similar to nicky's nose :OP
I realized my mistake with nicky which was that i put the foam parts together BEFORE i made any fleece patterns, so this time i traced all the shapes with a crayola marker on the other side of the fleece. now everything will fit perfectly.
the arms are nearly complete, My removable rod experiment was a bust but im going to instead make the left arm's rod an option my tightening the screw when i want the rod in and vice versa. for the foam arn i made a big dart cut at the elbow and put a leather strip there to act like a tendon and control the way it bends. i hope that works
