Who knew giving birth took so long? Posted by OttoVonGlumm on Aug 31, 2009
So after a couple of weeks I thought I would be further along....but with my hands in as many pots as I can get them into....my first build has not received as much attention as I would like it to. I think it was last weekend or the one before that I tried my hand(for the first time after my frying of brain) at antron and dye. I used a half packet of tan and half a bottle of liquid green, mixed in boiling water then added to the bath. After about ten minutes it was quite evident that the tan over-powered the green. I hung the antron to dry as I prepared another bath, this time a pure green mix. After about an hour an a half I got around the color I wanted, and a new perspective for dyeing(who knew color theory carried across so many fields....guess the professor did know what he was talking about!).
The final fleece is a muted green with a weird tan under tint....I would have like a lighter color, maybe on the next one. I must say I do prefer the crystal over the liquid RIT. Anyhow I'm not far off from finishing my first puppet, I've a great idea for the eyes and ears.....I was even entertaining the thought of running a tube from a hole in his mouth down to a bladder so he can "puke blood"........oh by the way if you haven't figured it out, this production is not really small kid friendly....All I have left to do is sew the arms with the posable hands, fleece it, add the eyes and nose, and dress it(I found a great baby 5 piece suit on ebay)......hmmm didn't seem like much until I just typed all that......here's to progress, forward ho..........

Nice work. I like how you sketch the details on the foam to give you the idea of the end result.

Just a little update........
Found this great drass beer onesie for fifty cents....A place holder until iI gets the 5 pc suit.
Got all but the neck stitch in the back of the neck done, I was very intimidated with the prospect of cutting and hand sewing the antron(I haven't hand sewn anything in about 15 years!). I still need to pick the seams and shave the antron.
I was very happy with the way the ear came out. I cut an ear shape then I cut an outer ridge and inner bump and glued them on. After that I carved the ear block to get a nice rounded shapely ear. Next I dipped the ears in polyurethane and allowed them to dry for a couple of days. I was afraid the ear would distort when I fleeced it and was looking for a way to hardened the form without adding weight, and the poly worked quite well, and allowed the ear to retain its shape with the fleece covering it.
There is a seam that runs from the corner of the mouth to the height above the eye right in the middle of this shot....I love antron soooo much!
So now I've got to glue and tuck the antron to the mouth plate and pick the rest of my seams, then I get to start on the really fun stuff.....the face.
