I've taken workshops with David Pannebecker of Arms Length where we used antron, but this is my first "Raw" antron. As to color, I will be dying it a skin tone. I need to get the "recipe" for different color skin tones so I can tweek what already exists rather than reinventing the "color" wheel.

My best advice for antron is light dye baths....It's better to build up color gradually through repeated soaking.....I've only dyed antron twice...I actually did the same piece of fleece with two different colors to achieve the color I wanted.  My next fleece will be a skin tone. I plan on using about a fourth to a half of the recommended dye, tan and pink, slowly building to the color desired.

If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to share what I have figured out so far.

So are you using one color at a time or mixing them together? Go through the process for me if you will please.

I originally tried a two color mix, about a half a packet of tan RIT mixed with a whole bottle(the liquid is supposed to be twice as potent as the crystals)of apple green RIT.  In retrospect I really prefer the crystals over the liquid dye.

First I filled a large tote full of icy cold tap water, I used this to soak the antron in 10-15 minutes to open up the fibers.

I then boiled around two gallons of water and placed another four into the clear plastic tub.  The four in the tub were the hottest tap water from a faucet.  I then poured the boiling water into a bucket and added my dye.  Like I said this first mix was half a tan crystal pack and a full green liquid bottle.  After stirring up the dye real good I poured it into the dye bath.

I think this is a picture of my first dye bath, It looks green but after about ten minutes a took the fleece out and pulled from one end to another wringing out the liquid and realized the tan far out powered the green even at a ratio of 4:1.

I then ran the antron under cold tap water and rinsed until the water coming from the fleece was clear and hung it to dry.  I ended up with a almost Fozzie bear color, like he ate two many hot dogs and then rode a roller coaster several times.   This wasn't quite the color I was going for so I decided hey what do I have to lose?  I dumped both baths did the process all over again but this time I added only apple green.  I would soak for fifteen minute increments, ring dry ,inspect the color, and re submerge the fleece.  After about an hour an forty-five minutes I achieved the color I wanted, rinsed the fleece one last time then hung overnight to dry.

The final fleece has a tan undertone but an overall green hue.  The pictures don't really do it justice, but you get the idea(I hope).  So this next fleece dye I will use colors separately and approach it like glazing in oil painting, or like dyeing an Easter egg.  You know, dye an egg yellow, dip one half in blue and you have green!  Good ole' color theory.  So get out your trusty color wheel and start experimenting.

Oh yeah.....you might want to test a small piece of antron before you commit a large swath of fabric, better to waste dye and water over fleece...I just sort of threw caution to the wind.......Good luck and more importantly HAVE FUN!!!

Thanks OttoVonGlumm for showing us one way to dye antron fleece......

.....I hate to be the thorn.....however......

....I mix the colours together before hand and then dye my fabric...it takes me about 30 minutes to dye a bit more for setting up and cleaning up but the dying process itself is about 30 minutes.

Just so people will know other options as well......
